This book really details the history of the Dodge pickup trucks through the years. I found it very useful when trying to distinguish the years in which parts could be interchangeable in my Dodge truck. The balance of pictures and text creates an enjoyable reading experience.

How to Restore Your Military Harley-Davidson, 1932-1952 (Authentic Restoration Guide) Review

How to Restore Your Military Harley-Davidson, 1932-1952 (Authentic Restoration Guide)

Bruce Palmer is already well known for his book: "How to restore your Harley-Davidson", that is considered world-wide as the bible on restoring older HD's. His new book is presented as a companion to that book. So it does not cover the restoration process itself but concentrates on describing the correct parts and finish. It gives detailed descriptions of the relation between engine-numbers, war department registration numbers and U.S.Army contract specifications. All military HD's built between 1932 and 1952 are presented. In total 38 types, including of course WLA (For the 42WLA alone 7 flavors are distinguished) and WLC, but also XA, the big twins and others. Very valuable for WLA restorers is the matrix describing all parts that differentiate the 17 types of WLA (40WLA - 52WLA).
Using both books it is possible to restore your military HD to factory-fresh specification. An exception is the rare experimental XA (the BMW R-71 clone) that is described to great detail in this book, but lacks support from the first book.
Restoring to `motor pool' specification (bikes as seen in the field) is not treated in the book beyond the pointing to common pitfalls. For unit markings the reader is deferred to U.S.Army publication AR 850-5. There are about 250 pictures in the book. In general I would have liked more photo's of bikes in actual use to support the restoration to `motor pool' instead of `factory fresh'.
This is really a most wonderful book, that is bound to get again the label 'bible' attached to it. And rightly so! In my classic HD club there's always a lot of discussion on what is right and what is wrong for a certain WLA or WLC, and until now nobody was really convincing because the supporting material was lacking. From now on if anyone disagrees with this book, he (she) better provide proof! In short: recommended!

Auto Repair For Dummies Review

Auto Repair For Dummies

While in CA I had a bad experience getting an oil change. The jiffy lube guy forgot to put the oil filler cap back on. I noticed the engine sound difference right away but since I didn't consider myself an expert in any way I didn't do anything. Well, for 2 weeks I drove my car. After driving for 10 minutes everytime the car would fill up with a oil burning smell and after I parked the car there would be the oil puddle on the road.
Finally I forced myself to open the hood and found the problem immediately. The oil cap was still wedged between the hoses where the JL guy left it. Luckily it hadn't fallen off, otherwise I would've never found the problem with my lack of car skills.
I went back to JL and told them what happenned. There appeared to be a discussion in the inside office. I peeked inside and saw the supervisor was laughing his head off. The guy who worked on my car came out and apologized. The manager appeared apologetic and offered to clean up the splattered oil mess under my hood if I would leave the car for a couple of days. Yeah right, like I would...after what happenned.
After this experience I looked if I could change the oil myself. I'd bought this dummies book a couple years eralier and it was gathering dust on my shelf. I'd never seriously read the book and like most people I thought dummies were just a quick brush thru of car concepts...not for the real hands-on person. So I went and bought the Haynes repair manual for my corolla (about $20).
I did an oil change and realised 2 things: One, it was incredibly simple. Two, it takes about 30 minutes for the oil to drain out (actually even after 30 minutes there is a slow drip coming out). That made me think of the 10-minute oil change you see advertized in some shops. The mechanics probably let it drain for 2-minutes max. That means there's still a half-liter of old oil still in the crankcase.
Since then I have always change my own oil except when there's snow on the ground since I live in an Apt (don't have my own garage).
The Haynes manual has a vareity of other stuff to do on your car and I realised that I needed some hands-on instruction. So I took a 14-class night course at the local community college ($250) which has really taught me a lot. The book followed there was Jack Erjavec's Automotive Technology which is an expensive but 'utltimate' book for automobiles.
While studying for the exam, I came upon this dummies book on my shelf and I was struck by the clear, consise explanation and neat drawings which rivalled those in Erjavec's. I mentally kicked myself for not reading this dummies book that I had with me all the time. The Haynes manual had all the right steps needed for any job, but little or no explanation or not easy to understand, about the system or basic concepts and the photographs are pathetic.
Since then, apart from oil changes, I have flushed the cooling system, cleaned and reinstalled the battery, changed the air filter and other simple stuff. I would try more stuff if I had a garage.
To cut it short, if you're like me (you aren't a auto-maniac, but you can fix afew things around the house) you need three things:
This book by Scalar for very good system concepts, drawings and reasonably detailed repair steps. A fully detailed repair book like haynes or Chilton's for your particular car. Finally a small evening course in a local communnity college on auto fundamentals would make you really comfortable with your car. (Off course you need to buy some tools too). Good luck.

Most of us don't know the first thing about the machines we're licensed to drive – and this can turn a ticket to freedom into a ticket to trouble. If you're like most people, you probably tend to drive around until something goes wrong with the car. You then incur the expense of replacing worn and burnt-out parts (or the entire engine) when low-cost, regular maintenance could have kept your wheels turning for a long time.
Auto Repair For Dummies is indispensable for anyone who is tired of nodding and smiling at the incomprehensible mutterings of your mechanic, only to end up shelling out money for repairs that you neither fully understand nor always need. This easy-to-understand guide is also for you if you
Don't have the vaguest idea of how a car works.
Can't identify anything you see under the hood of your vehicle.
Are tired of other people assuming (especially if you're a teenager or a woman) that you aren't capable of handling repairs yourself.
Don't want to feel helpless in an emergency.
Are tired of being ripped off because of your own ignorance.

This book shows you how your car works; what it needs in the way of tender loving care; and how to keep from being overcharged if you need to entrust repairs to someone else. Auto Repair For Dummies also gives you the scoop on these topics and more:
What makes your vehicle go (and how and why)
A program of "preventive medicine" to avoid trouble
Shopping for tools and knowing how to use them
Diesel engines and alternatively powered cars
How to keep your car looking its best
Dealing with on-road emergencies
Checking your tires, alignment, and steering

By handling the simple maintenance and tune-ups and being able to diagnose trouble and perform the less complex repairs yourself, you'll save some serious money. Once you break the ice (or crack open the hood), the heady sense of power will carry you through basic car repair and maintenance with confidence and ease.

Haynes Ford Mustang 1994 thru 1999 (Haynes Repair Manuals)
Average Reviews:

I just got this book a week ago. I haven't really done any repairs based on this book yet, but it seems to be an okay book. It has different sections on each of the major systems of the car viz. cooling, heating and ac systems, fuel and exhaust systems, engine electrical systems, emissions and engine control systems, transmission systems, suspension and steering systems, chassis electrical system etc.
I basically bought this book hoping to be able to troubleshoot a trouble code (P0183) that made my 99 Mustang's "Service Engine" light to come on. This code is not listed in the OBD II codes list in this book. According to my scan tool, this code means "Engine Fuel Temperature Sensor A shows a high input value". This book does not have any mention of an Engine Fuel Temperature Sensor. So, I have to warn you there may be a few things missing in this book.
I think one essential section that should be in any of today's auto repair manuals is a section on the possible trouble codes and step-by-step troubleshooting for each code. In the 3 cars that I have owned in the last 6 years, one common issue has been the "Service Engine" light coming on out of the blue. Dealers make big bucks just debugging the OBD code. My dealer charged me 120 for just reading the code and finding out what is wrong.
Also, I felt that many of the pictures are too close-up making it extremely difficult to determine the relative location on the car.

Picture this: Spend a three day weekend stripping, cleaning, polishing and replacing hard to find parts on a 1979 motorcycle, it's finally back together!! Some fresh clean fuel, choke & ignition on, and ...it doesn't start.
This book is a must have for motorcycle enthusiasts who are budding mechanics and need to refer to anything related to the fuel systems, which invariably cause the most frustrating and hard to diagnose faults!!
If like me you need to know a little more about motorcycle fuel systems (tuning, repair or maintenance) then this is the book for you, it explains so many intricate details about the entire fuel combustion process, specifically for motorcycle carbs/fuel injection. It's very recent (Y2K), unlike some other Motorcycle Carb Manuals.
Technical data and details are presented clearly, there's lots of diagrams and tips for anything from the oldest, most basic carbs to complex electronic fuel injected systems.

Practical advice covers overhaul, set up and the use of diagnostic equipment, plus an entire section on fault finding.

Honda Shadow VT600 & 750: '88 to '08 (Haynes Service & Repair Manual) Review

Honda Shadow VT600 and 750: '88 to '08 (Haynes Service and Repair Manual)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After reading the review that gave this book a single star, I was a little hesitant to buy it. However, I have used "Haynes" service manuals for a number of motorcycles that I've owned over the years, and found them to be very helpful in every way, so I decided to take a chance with this one. And I am glad I did.
This Manual has a lot of improvement over the ones I've previously used; aside from a fully illustrated, a step by step description of every imaginable job; it has a brief history of the Honda Motor Company, and the evolvement of the modern Honda Motorcycle. It also has a section on the tools and workshop tips, illustrating, in full color, tools required for various jobs, from basic maintenance and minor repairs, to major overhaul and specialized tools. The book also rates every job according to difficulty and level of expertise required to perform the specific job; from a simple job suitable for the novice, to the very difficult suitable only for the expert DIY or Professional, so you can judge before talking a job if it is suitable for your skill level. It also has a full color wiring diagrams for all models covered. I've found a wealth of information that is also very nicely tabulated and easy to find.
Being an experienced DIY, worked on a number of different motorcycles, performing jobs ranging from regular maintenance to engine rebuilding, I've found this book to be of great value to me; and it would be to other DIY's, if purchased for the reason the book was intended to (Repair and Maintenance).
I do not hesitate to give this book the full five stars. It sure deserves it.

Understanding Automotive Electronics (Sams Understanding Series) Review

Understanding Automotive Electronics (Sams Understanding Series)
Average Reviews:

The book title, Understanding Automotive Electronics, is an understatement. This book, in chapters 5, 6, and 7, gives one of the best explanations of modern engine control systems I have ever read. Every major concept of OBD-II vehicles is discussed in clear precise language. These chapters alone are worth the price of the book.
My favorite feature of the book is the end of chapter questions which can be used to test your understanding of the material. And in the back of the book, you can check your answers.
Be careful when buying automotive books. Many are written by good in-shop mechanics who have poor writing skills. This book is different. Mr. Ribbens not only knows his stuff but can communicate it to others as well.

Sara Liberte's book is a great aid for riders like me who can't afford to take their bike to the dealership or a shop to have work done. I believe riders should be doing their own service work. You really know your bike when you are the one keeping it in good, safe running order. Make time to take care of your bike. It saves lots of money and I enjoy servicing my motorcycle. As opposed to fixing it because it was neglected.I think riders should service their own bike. You really know your bike when you are the one doing the service and keeping it safe. And the dealership is there if you get into something over your head. Keeping your bike safe is the most important thing. This book shows me how many things are done. It's a good addition to my motorcycle library.

I ordered this one from Amazon because I felt it was better than the other manual ( from Chilton ) that I previewed ( at the local auto parts store !). Haynes has better step by step instructions and illustrations.
There is is a better manual sold by Helm Inc 1-800-782-4356. I was told this is the one that was prepared by Ford and used at the dealerships. For my 1997 Ranger, the cost for Helm Shop Manual, Eletrical Manual, and Emmisions Manual is $306.95 plus tax & shipping. And if your want to save a few bucks, they have all the above on a CD for $175.00 plus tax & shipping.
I'll try to get by with my Haynes Manual !

Car Hacks & Mods For Dummies Review

Car Hacks and Mods For Dummies
Average Reviews:

Don't let the title deceive you. This book is a comprehensive look at how to plan out modifications to your car. While lots of people love "modifying" their cars, it's quite easy to get sucked into the hole of buying the wrong parts for the wrong reasons. It won't tell you the difference between one specific exhaust to another, but it'll help you figure out what you should be looking for in qualities and features in the products you purchase AND what products you can avoid entirely.
This book helps cut through the BS in a lot of the aftermarket parts industry and helps you quickly and easily find what you should be looking for when you want to modify your car. Open the book to a random page, and more often than not, you'll find some interesting tidbit that you wouldn't have necessarily known before.
In addition there's a rather large (6 chapters) and in-depth discussion on ECU and piggyback devices, taking a closer look at how to push the limits of your vehicle with computer technologies. Given the authors background, I'd say this is about the most eye-opening chapter that's a great resource for even advanced auto enthusiasts.
And while you can't expect the book to tell you how the specifics of how to unbolt your old engine and replace it with a high performance monster nut by nut, it will help you find the resources online to get the specifics to the questions you might still have. There's a whole chapter dedicated to dozens of forums full of enthusiasts ready to help you find the answer to the questions you seek.

wow where do i begin. first off im a student at mmi (motorcycle mechanics institute)which has campuses in both phoenix and orlando. i bought this book to supplement my education and honestly it was a great purchase. its very easy to read and understand the first time through whether or not you have previous motorcycle knowledge of which i had none or you are experienced in mechanics. the theory section is an absolute must and just as thorough as the notes i received at mmi. the photos are great much better than youd find in your average factory manual and if you have no mechanical experience forget about trying to read one of those. factory manuals are written for "seasoned" techs. mark zimmermans book is written for both the average joe biker or someone with plenty of experience. he even takes the time to put in tips such as "what to do when you strip a bolt", "how to torque a bolt" and much more. overall im very impressed i have yet to find a section that i felt was inadequate. other books i have found dance around the subjects and dont give you the information you need. this book hits the nail on the head everytime.....thanks mark

How to Diagnose and Repair Automotive Electrical Systems (Motorbooks Workshop) Review

How to Diagnose and Repair Automotive Electrical Systems (Motorbooks Workshop)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This books is indeed the best automotive electrical systems book out there, as almost all other books waste the entire book on theories that hardly apply to actual hands-on diagnosis.
I am a graduate of highly-recognized aircraft maintenance college, and have achieved above-average grades in electrical/electronic systems courses. However, during my education we hardly covered "practical" part of our profession as certified technicians. This book cleared up some of my questions and was definitely better than any book I've read on electricity.
However, the downside is that the book still spends much space explaining theories that do not help doing the actual troubleshooting/repair. It could use more photos/illustrations, as well as comparisons between good units & bad units. Some of the components covered are also obsolete (point contact ignition system, DC generator, etc...), only helpful for those who are into vintage vehicles. The book also has too much advertisement, especially for Fluke products. Fluke multimeters are indeed the best in the world, and I myself use a Fluke. However, even my entry-level Fluke was $150 and for most home mechanics, Sears Craftsman DMM's are more than sufficient.
All in all, there is simply no better book than this one. On his next book, I would like to see more info on imported vehicles, as well as more up-to-date systems such as skid control, traction control, electronic climate control, navigation, discharge-type headlight bulbs, LED's, Optitron clusters, and engine-to-transmission data-link systems.
