(More customer reviews)Unlike many other sailing texts, this book covered a broad range of boating topics. Clearly not a sailor's fine-tuning tome, this book surprised me, however, by covering sail trim and boat balancing very adequately, and in some cases more clearly than more advanced sailing manuals. Since it's written for sailors in U.S. waters, it covers topics such as trailering, waterway navigation, and rules of the road for the U.S. more specifically than any other text I've seen.
All in all, I'd say this is my top choice for a text for a new sailor who's got down the sailing basics and needs to know the many practical aspects of safe sailing in U.S. waters.

(More customer reviews)Despite the generous humour found within, this is probably NOT the book you want to get if you need to find out particular data on your Jeep. The book seems to focus on common sense issues related to 4X4's in general, so it leaves much to be desired in terms of identifying axles, transmissions, transfer cases and the like. Oh yeah, there aren't any wiring diagrams included. I suppose the book was written on the premise that the reader should already know what s/he has in and around their Jeep...which, in a sense, kinda relegates the book to owner's manual status rather than being a bible on the subject. The Haynes manuals are much better.

High Speed Photography and Photonics (SPIE Press Monograph Vol. PM120) Review

(More customer reviews)It's not a bad book. The author tries to encompass everything. Reading the book, it rapidly becomes clear the parts that are written from research rather than experience. This does not mean it's a bad book; on the contrary, it's really quite good. It has severe limitations in many areas where the author really does not appear to be quite certain of his subject matter. I have this book and used it as a starting point in the research for a book I wrote, myself. As an example, the section on Schlieren imaging is rather obscure. There are websites that explain it more clearly though I cannot vouch for their accuracy as I have not myself done any Schlieren imaging (this will be attempted later). This book is an EXCELLENT starting point for anybody seriously interested in researching high-speed imaging. As far as practical high-speed imaging is concerned, if somebody wants to try it then there are better instructional books available.

(More customer reviews)Many of the fix-it-yourself books seem to miss the mark with lengthy detail for a simple job or few hands-on photos. The Ramsey's latest book is right on target. It includes a brief description of how specific household things are supposed to work, tell you what typically goes wrong, then offers numbered and illustrated instructions for fixing more than 160 household things. It also includes tips on how to fix everything else around the house using basic tools, materials, and some common sense. Even if you're going to go out and buy a new one anyway it's a fun read!

The Wild Road Review

(More customer reviews)I picked up this book expecting it to be sentimental and silly. I was very pleasantly surprised. Firstly, the author uses language beautifully, and has a keen eye for animal behavior. Secondly, the plot and characters are refreshingly original -- while reminiscent of Adams' excellent The Plague Dogs, the book resembles Tailchaser's Song (which I didn't like) rather little, and I'm not sure what the reviewer was thinking who made the connection with Gallico's book. If I have a criticism, it's that the villain ( so far -- I'm not quite done with the book) has a nebulous, confusing quality which makes him less than purely terrifying. Overall, this is an excellent fantasy, very much intended for intelligent adults.

When I picked up this little tome;I didn't really expect it to amount to much. As usual,I read the customer reviews,and was really left wondering.Quite a spread of opinions!
After reading,I have to say that I fully agree with those who gave it top marks.
I didn't count the things covered exactly;but there are about 45 or so. When you finish;you are going to feel there could easily be thousands of things and expressions we use all the time,without really knowing what they mean or how they came about.
An excellent little gem to lay around for people to pick up and wile away a little time. However;don't be suprised if,as the Irish so aptly put it; "it gets nicked"....oh,how I love that word!
If you think this little book is superficial, and just might not be one of the pinacles of greatness in the world of books;you may be right.But wait till you see the extensive Bibliography at the end of the book.If you think the subject of this book is minor ,just skimming through this Bibliography,will show you how little we really know of what we speak.
Here's a smattering of what to expect:
What is the legal definition of insanity?
Why are the Liberals to the "Left" and the Conservatives to the "Right"?
What is the difference between a Republic and a Democracy?
How do microwaves work?
What makes food Kosher?
How do subiminal messages work?
Did The Three Musketeers actually exist?

This book is very old and outdated, and most of the points do not make any sense. It continually says that aftermarket parts are inferior to GM parts. Plain and simply put, a lot of steps have been taken in the automotive aftermarket world that this book does not talk about nor should it, since it was written so long ago that Jegs, and Summit did not even exist.
Save your money instead of buying this book, unless you are a very unskilled, and you plan on using junk yard parts to build your engine.

However, I have used "Haynes" service manuals for a number of motorcycles that I've owned over the years, and found them to be very helpful in every way, so I decided to take a chance with this one. And I am glad I did.
This Manual has a lot of improvement over the ones I've previously used; aside from a fully illustrated, a step by step description of every imaginable job; it has a brief history of the Honda Motor Company, and the evolvement of the modern Honda Motorcycle. It also has a section on the tools and workshop tips, illustrating, in full color, tools required for various jobs, from basic maintenance and minor repairs, to major overhaul and specialized tools. The book also rates every job according to difficulty and level of expertise required to perform the specific job; from a simple job suitable for the novice, to the very difficult suitable only for the expert DIY or Professional, so you can judge before talking a job if it is suitable for your skill level. It also has a full color wiring diagrams for all models covered. I've found a wealth of information that is also very nicely tabulated and easy to find.
Being an experienced DIY, worked on a number of different motorcycles, performing jobs ranging from regular maintenance to engine rebuilding, I've found this book to be of great value to me; and it would be to other DIY's, if purchased for the reason the book was intended to (Repair and Maintenance).
I do not hesitate to give this book the full five stars. It sure deserves it.

(More customer reviews)This is not a book about how to hack the controllers in your car's engine to make it go fast, burn different fuel mixtures, etc. Just like the title says, it is about car computers-and this means everything from actual onboard computers, to audio and video configurations. Like the other books in the "Hack" series, this is not a long narrative about Car PCs, it is simply a book full of 75 projects arranged by topic. Some of the tamer projects include installing headrest video screens, listening to email on the road once you've rigged up your computer to receive free wi-fi, installing a back-up camera and screen, receiving satellite TV, and rigging a free GPS-based navi-system. Of course, since all this stuff is power-heavy, there's also a bunch of hacks on how to strengthen your car's electrical system. To give you an idea, one of the hacks shows how to install a heavier-duty alternator. Throughout the book there are plenty of instructive diagrams, cross references to other relevant hacks in the book, and lots of links to web addresses where further instruction and freeware can be found.

How to Rebuild the Small-Block Chevrolet (S-A Design Workbench Series) Review

There are many instances where the text describes something happening in the picture, but there's no picture at all that's relevant to what's being described. Even more points where a the text describes something in a picture with a direction like (left) or (arrow), but there's absolutely nothing there. In addition, you might be given a page number to look up some tidbit of information, only to turn to that page and find there's something completely different there.
The first part of the book, disassembly, references Snap-On tool numbers repeatedly, while completely ignoring the other "professional" tool vendors, or even giving an alternative that the DIY-er might actually be able to find. There's even a page and a half devoted to Snap-On tools. I'm not sure if I've purchased a rebuild manual or a Snap-On brochure.
This book is also good for 1955-1985 engines. While the changes were mentioned, there's very little information on the changes and what to do about them, like roller lifters and the one-piece rear seal. There's more information on the 1955 & 1956 engines, which you'll likely never encounter anymore, than for the 1986-1995 engines, which are everywhere. It even goes so far as to say to "consider upgrading to a roller lifer and camshaft package".
All in all, if you've rebuilt engines and are just looking for general guidelines on a small-block Chevy rebuild, then this book might work for you. If you've never rebuilt engines, and this is your guiding hand, then you'll probably be disappointed by the misinformation.

(More customer reviews)As an intermediate level "hacker" when it comes to repairs, I had always been more comfortable having the local dealer take care of routine maintenance. Prior to receiving this book I was only changing the oil and transmission fluid on my bike. However, "armed" with this new found information I now cover the bike from front to end! The layout and excellent photographs are easy for even ME to understand!! There is not a lot of industry jargon involved, making it simple for the "mechanically handicapped" to understand. My only complaint is that the book is not longer and I am impatiently awaiting "Volume II."

SAS Urban Survival Handbook Review

(More customer reviews)After reading about this book, I looked high and low for it. "Written by a former SAS man after his experience in the military did little to prepare him for the dangers in civilian life." I expected a manual on self-defense, and their legal issues. (Something Nicolas Cage's character from "Con Air" could have used) After finally getting a copy, the book has little to do with what the catalog implied. The title byline reads "how to protect yourself from domestic accident, mugging, burglary and attack." Three of the four were in the same chapter! What we did get covers the dangers from stress, pollution, even lead paint to driving and safe sex to self defense and terrorism.
The book's good points are it covers amazing scope of subject matter. It doesn't linger on any one topic too long; it simply states the dangers involved with whatever hazard in a few paragraphs, then on to the next item. The book is organized very well and of course, being written like a military manual, the flow is very logical. The color sections on poisonous plants and dangerous animals are very informative. The section on self-defense is a great primer on the basics of fighting.
Unfortunately, that information will never be read. The data on household and city dangers is so vast one must wade thru the "don't do that's" we learned as a kid to find the rare bit of new and useful information. The chapter on the law is mostly for England and is ten years out of date. Especially on firearms in which the author, being former military, surprised me by having an anti-gun attitude.
The chapter on terrorism is thorough but nearly useless to people in the US. Anti-terrorism counter-measures are briefly mentioned and only for the wealthy (bullet proof vests?) who do not need this book as they have bodyguards.
As a military man myself (USMC), I can sympathize with his views on household dangers. In the military, people are briefed on how to safely handle dangerous machines and chemicals, often with mandatory wearing of safety gear (gloves, goggles, etc.) when using the chemicals. In civilian life, the only times warning labels and safety precautions are ever mentioned is in a lawsuit because of product misuse! In the military, you also know how to fight whom, while in civilian life you never know who will attack you but you can go to jail for hurting an attacker in self-defense.
However, I think the author had greatly overdone the coverage of every possible danger to ones health and safety, often to the point of paranoia. I cannot recommend this book to American readers. I gave it three stars because the information that is useful is *very* useful, but it only is only a small part of a big book. Besides, I am sure that all the good knowledge is in either the *SAS Survival Handbook (vol. 1)* or *Collins Gem SAS Self-Defence* especially the latter. It should contain everything the great self-defense section has with a little more detail.
P.s. I found it a amazing that this book, after a year of my searching never received a single review and now TWO people review it on the same day (I just knew I should have done this yesterday! :). I do not fault my follow reviewer, as being English; he or she may have found it more relevant. My review is more for American customers.

(More customer reviews)There are certain skills that are "wasted" on no one. Home repair is one such skill. I believe that 5 weeks after purchasing this book - the book has already paid for itself. My parents moved back into my grandmother's 1960-era house after she passed away last year. The house was in need of a few repairs, but money was a limiting factor. I had to find a way to teach myself (and my dad) how to weatherproof the basement, replacing an ancient water heater & dishwasher, replace several outlets with new GFCI (p. 397!) outlets, and finally, how to update the upstair's faucets and fixtures. I logged onto Amazon.com and typed-in HOME REPAIR. To be honest, I chose this book because it had 500+ pages and two 5-star reviews. When this book arrived, I instantly felt the weight and quality of the binding.(think college textbook material) I quickly found DETAILED descriptions of the tasks I would soon have to perform. I called my father and said "Get ready we're going to Home Depot!" On the phone, my father expressed concern over our lack of experience. When my father got in my truck, I handed him the the Black&Decker text. I had put PostIt's on the pages with our projects. He slipped on his glasses and peered through his bi-focals and didn't say a word on the way to purchase tools & supplies. Once in the parking lot, I could hardly turn-off the engine before he was pointing to pictures saying "Ours looks just like this! I want some gloves like that!" And he was making a bee-line for the door!(the old man can move!) He was excited and so was I. Now, it has beeen 5 weeks since that first trip to Home Depot. Both my father and I have the cuts and scrapes and the ever present sore backs to prove that we have done our own home repairs. My father now keeps the Black&Decker text at his house "for safe keeping." He cleans the text with a moist cloth after each project. The projects don't seem to have an end in sight, which I believe is a direct result of my dad reading the text for "suggestions." My suggestion....don't let anyone "borrow" this text, unless of course - you love him!

This book was written before all the electronic fuel injection and aluminum heads of the eighties were introduced. So it's really aimed at non fuel injected cars. This is 70's technology, very well written with good photos. A Classic reference book I keep in my toolbox. (I'd rate it five stars if it were newer info.)

(More customer reviews)I also have the Lighting for Digital Video and Television, Third Edition book (also a Focal Press release), which seemed more like a book geared more towards students; I was hoping for something a little more professional and this book is exactly what I was looking for focusing on lighting. It is very descriptive and technical from what each lighting crew is responsible and the equipments. It is also helpful explaining in detail of how a cinematographer decides on the lighting and the necessary involvement of the crews for each other; not just a simple generic description of it.
It is like the The Filmmaker's Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide for the Digital Age, but focused all on lighting. I can see that this book won't just benefit filmmakers/gaffers but anyone interested in electrical components.
I definitely recommend for anyone interested in filmmaking/gaffer/cinematographer. This is a must-have for lighting. I really wish I had this book sooner when I had to be the cinematographer for a Super 16mm student short film.
