(More customer reviews)This book contains two FAA Advisory Circulars. The first, "Ácceptable Methods, Techniques, and Practices - Aircraft Inspection and Repair" is up to date. The second, "Ácceptable Methods, Techniques, and Practices - Aircraft Alterations" was superseded by a new version published by the FAA on 03/03/2008.
For an in-the-shop reference the first part (2/3rds of the book)is current and very valuable.

(More customer reviews)Walk into any yacht club full of sailors and mention a diesel problem and watch their eyes glaze over as condolences are expressed. Benign neglect and wishful thinking often summarize a sailor's attitude towards the iron beast below decks. Some try to prevent problems with their checkbook and credit card, others roll up their sleeves and hope for the best. I was part of the latter group, but no more.
Self-sufficiency is ingrained in the sailing culture. Sailors who have no fear of tackling fiberglass repairs, solving rigging problems, or intricacies of onboard plumbing shy away from their diesel and its mysteries. Yet, a diesel is a very simple machine and understanding the workings of a diesel engine is made equally simple and understandable with Jean-luc Pallas's manual.
MDE begins with an overview of how a diesel runs and the systems involved in keeping it running; fuel, air, and electric. The Manual is richly illustrated with large clear photos and simple understandable schematics. Pallas avoids lengthy passages describing a concept, providing instead a short paragraph or two with bullet points highlighting essential information. Each maintenance item is rated for difficulty, simple, technical, or complex to guide the neophyte diesel mechanic. Estimates of the time needed to complete the task and a list of necessary tools accompany the rating.
Marine Diesel Engines is a welcome addition to any sailor's book locker, it certainly was to mine! I just wonder how well it will hold up to the inevitable greasy thumbprints and spilled diesel.

(More customer reviews)Sara Liberte's book is a great aid for riders like me who can't afford to take their bike to the dealership or a shop to have work done. I believe riders should be doing their own service work. You really know your bike when you are the one keeping it in good,safe running order. Make time to take care of your bike. It saves lots of money and I enjoy servicing my motorcycle. As opposed to fixing it because it was neglected.I think riders should service their own bike. You really know your bike when you are the one doing the service and keeping it safe. And the dealership is there if you get into something over your head. Keeping your bike safe is the most important thing. This book shows me how many things are done. It's a good addition to my motorcycle library.

(More customer reviews)I opened the book on my kitchen table. Looks good, with lots of details. For example, when replacing the impeller in an Alpha outdrive, there are lots of careful photos and line drawings to guide you through the process.
I took the book outside to start working; within 15 minutes, the pages started coming out. Soon entire sections were falling out. The binding is worthless. Once I drilled holes in the book and put it in a 3-ring binder, it worked fine.
Details can be a bit more sketchy when performing more complex maintenance (e.g. "remove any accessories that will be in the way of removing the valve cover, then remove the bolts). I suppose that if you are going to work on rockers or remove heads, they assume you have some skills and confidence! However, the instructions are clear and lead you through the process.
Overall, the book is good, and similar to the Haynes or Chiltons auto repair manuals. Although the book covers several engines and outdrives, it does a good job of keeping them straight. I would recommend this book to the "shade tree" mechanic who wants to work on the engine and outdrive with confidence (or at least be able to speak knowledgably to the mechanic).

(More customer reviews)This appears to be a contract book where the publisher comes up with a title that will sell and then contracts someone to write the book. It is disorganized, and the different chapters vary greatly in quality. An entire chapter consist almost completely of text lifted out of FAA FARs and advisory circulars with no interpretation or commentary between listings. Some chapters are dedicated to discussing engine operation and electronics, but cover it in a more cursory manor than most private pilot study books. The chapter on electrical systems states several times that electrical systems travel at the speed of light in a wire when they travel closer to 2/3 of this speed. This is a nit, but goes to show how little effort was put into constructing this book. I found the book overall almost completely useless.

(More customer reviews)This book is a must have for the occasional do-it-your-selfer. Being a compilation of all of the Don Casey books on sailboat maintenance, I find myself pulling this book off the shelf more often than any other maintenance book I own.
I find the drawings and step by step instructions to be well thought out and easy to follow. Geared for the occasional weekend warrior, this book shows you how to do it right while pointing out many of the pitfalls that often accompany a sailboat maintenance project.
I highly recommend it for those like me who own an aging sailboat but don't have a Pentagon sized budget laying on the side to give the yard.

(More customer reviews)I bought this in conjunction with Peter Compton's book. I like booth. Calder is more detailed and more informative, but I find Compton easier to understand and more direct. If I have an engine problem I might start with Compton's book to narrow the possibilites down and Calder's book for detailed explanation. This book is somewhat redundant with Calder's "Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual" which is definitely a must have. Overall, great book and well worth the money. Would I buy again? Definitely
