Days of the Endless Corvette: A Novel Review

Days of the Endless Corvette: A Novel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Meet one of the most endearing protagonists since Huck Finn: Earl Mulvaney, the small-town Southern hero of Man Martin's debut novel. Have your box of Kleenex handy for Earl's heartbreaking obstacles as he cares for his mother, pursues his Corvette dreams, and woos his childhood sweetheart. Yet Martin's novel combines tragedy and comedy, and you will laugh out loud plenty. In short, your spouse is going to think either you're drunk or going through "the change" while you read the book, but your book club will understand. (And yes, you should read Days of the Endless Corvette with a few friends; it is a novel to share.) Earl's got to put his dreams into action among idiosyncratic small-town Southern characters you'd swear were real--they're that funny. The population of Humble County includes a mechanic who believes that cars evolved from fish and a trailer-restaurant owner who cleverly bypasses the county's alcohol and hunting restrictions. Another town resident endlessly pines for a lost love, not the wife who left him, but the dog she took with her, Digger. Whether this cast is chasing down bees or putting out various fires, the book's wise and winking narrator loves a good joke, so humor scatters down almost every page. Yet Martin's playful and innovative technique doesn't sacrifice soul, which makes this a novel for all lovers of great Southern literature.
Days of the Endless Corvette is in part about bringing a hero from boyhood to manhood, but along the way, it touches on everything from Schrodinger's cat to Civil War treasure. The novel is also about lovingly sharing stories, of the meaningful transformation storytelling brings. One of the characters tells his son, "If you love what you do, every day is like a vacation." Reading the book, you will know that you are in good hands, that the author loves what he does, and that you and he are taking a wondrous ride together.

Brown Like Coffee--Cow Cover Review

Brown Like Coffee--Cow Cover

This book is a condensed version of Shad's first book (The Fuel and the Flame). It is written in a very unique way in that each chapter is named after a coffee beverage that is relevant to the chapter's message. (First chapter is Espresso - basics of the Faith). He notes that you can go into a coffee shop and order that coffee while you read and take notes on the chapter, pretty neat! Many things are covered in this book; from sharing your faith to building friendships and becoming the right person instead of looking for the right person to shock therapy discipleship. Highly insightful and intriguing. Beware, this is not for the casual reader as it will bring you to your knees in prayer, to your bible, to worshiping the Living God with your every being. I recommend getting the Fuel and the Flame, and after a while come back to this book to read through and refresh your memory and re-tune yourself. Blessings and many more as you die to self following the King.

Spurr's Boatbook: Upgrading the Cruising Sailboat Review

Spurr's Boatbook: Upgrading the Cruising Sailboat
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I first ran across this gem at a friend's home during 2009. We both own older boats. I thought this was an excellant book and came home and order a used copy for my library. Spurr has several worth while books on the market.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Spurr's Boatbook: Upgrading the Cruising Sailboat

Now in its second edition, completely revised and updated, Spurr's Boatbook remains the best single source for understanding and improving your boat. You need not live with a dark or dank cabin, insufficient space for stowage or chartwork, or sheet winches, halyards, and reefing arrangements so inconvenient that you often find yourself motoring when you'd rather be sailing. Somewhere beneath your boat's crazed gelcoat, untamed rig, patchwork electrical system, and stubborn steering lies the boat of your dreams. This book will enable you to envision that boat in detail--how its deck hardware is laid out, what the rig looks like, where its hull and decks are reinforced, and how its cabin arrangements are altered to fit your needs.
And the book will help you translate that vision into reality by showing you what work should be done and in what order, which projects you can do yourself and which you should probably hire out, and how much time or money might be involved. Along the way, Dan Spurr gives step-by-step instructions, supported by Bruce Bingham's beautifully clear drawings, for many useful projects any do-it-yourselfer can tackle, including autopilot installation, deck hardware modifications, and electrical system upgrades.
The gear, equipment, design, and construction standards cited in this book--often in very specific detail with brand-name recommendations--are as useful for evaluating a new boat as they are for buying a used boat or improving the boat you already own.

Power Cruising Review

Power Cruising
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
At first glance it would appear this book would be a bible for all power boaters. This is not the case. The writer seems content passing his "war stories" off as fact and the only explanation as to why/how certain things happen on a boat. This is the 2nd. Edition and it reads and looks like it was written 20 years ago. Some care could have been taken to make a 1999 publication look like a 1999 publication. Early on in the "Becoming an informed buyer" section there is not one mention of using the internet as an information source. I think Newsgroups (like rec.boats) and other sites should be given at least a mention.
In the equipment section he mentions a 200,000 or 300,000 candle power portable searchlight are sufficient for nighttime cruising. PLEASE! Anyone who has seen/used one knows they are complete junk. In 1999 they sell great 1 million candlepower portables for next to nothing.
Finally the author calls Dock Line, "Rope". Do I need to say more?

Boating enthusiast Claiborne S. Young offers sportsmen a complete guide to the selection, outfitting, and maintenance of a power boat. Young has assembled his firsthand experience with power boats into a step-by-step manual, designed particularly with beginners in mind.Young's guide saves beginners and seasoned cruisers who are stepping up to a larger boat both time and money. It contains a wealth of research as well as valuable inside tips for avoiding common pitfalls. Young begins with preliminary advice to captains who are buying their first thirty- to forty-five-foot boat. Explaining how different types of hulls and designs can affect a boat's on-the-water performance, he helps determine the skipper's needs of size, power, and style. While waiting for the boat to be delivered, Young suggests that cruisers take care of details such as acquiring appropriate insurance, choosing a marina, and taking preliminary courses on navigation or safety. Once the boat has arrived, the most exciting part--outfitting--begins. Young lists the basic necessities as well as practical and optional accessories that can facilitate on-board tasks. His emphasis is on safety as he discusses flotation devices, communication and navigation systems, and the dual importance of reading charts and heeding the warnings of offshore navigational aids.

Ford Total Performance: The Road to World Racing Domination, 1962-1970 Review

Ford Total Performance: The Road to World Racing Domination, 1962-1970
Average Reviews:

This book could be considered an alternative to Volume One of "The Dust and the Glory" for readers who aren't interested in flathead-era Ford racing. There is really interesting coverage of the Sixties Indy engine program. A few of the photos are the same as "The Dust and the Glory," and a couple of the paragraphs read like direct lifts from it. There are some factual errors with contextual, non-Ford information (e.g., implying that Mark Donohue raced in the Indy 500 in 1968), but the primary information about the Ford racing program seems sound.

If It's Broke, Fix It Review

If It's Broke, Fix It

Many of the fix-it-yourself books seem to miss the mark with lengthy detail for a simple job or few hands-on photos. The Ramsey's latest book is right on target. It includes a brief description of how specific household things are supposed to work, tell you what typically goes wrong, then offers numbered and illustrated instructions for fixing more than 160 household things. It also includes tips on how to fix everything else around the house using basic tools, materials, and some common sense. Even if you're going to go out and buy a new one anyway it's a fun read!

Amps: The Other Half of Rock 'N' Roll Review

Amps: The Other Half of Rock 'N' Roll
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As the title of this book implies, it is about the role of guitar amplifiers in creating the unique signature sounds that many people instantly associate with various bands and guitarists they've heard over the years. While many musicians and the public tend to focus on the guitar itself in providing a unique sound, amps easily account for half or more of the sound quality and tonality of a performance. This book includes a good technical description of how guitar amps work, what makes them different from other types of amplifiers, and a worthwhile discussion of vintage tube amp tone versus the reissue models now being marketed by various manufacturers. It also has a useful troubleshooting section for dealing with various symptoms of an ailing amp. Perhaps the most interesting part of the book is on the human nature side, providing excellent thumbnail sketches of the various companies and personalities that were involved in pioneering amplifier innovations, such as Jim Marshall and the legendary Leo Fender. The book also deals with the histories and/or products of other companies (including Vox, Ampeg, MESA/Boogie, Roland, Gibson and others), and has lots of photographs and reproductions of old advertising fliers. My only complaint about the book is that it misses the opportunity to give at least a little bit of technical specifications for the amps that are discussed and pictured. As just one example, on page 21 there is a photograph of a Fender Tweed Deluxe that was taken in Tuscon with the caption: "This cinder-block wall art surrounding Tucson's biggest meat packing plant seemed like the logical place to shoot this amp. Musta been the heat." The effort at humor aside, a more useful caption might have been, "This model Tweed Deluxe was manufactured by Fender between 1954 and 1961 and boasted a single 12" Jensen and 15 watts of power." It would have been a mistake for Fliegler to try to provide extensive technical specs on the numerous amps that are pictured throughout the book, but a little more detail in the captions would have been appreciated. I wouldn't want this one narrow criticism to overshadow the value of this entertaining and useful book, which will be of interest to players and collectors alike. The best thing you can say about a book is that it will change the way you think -- and that is exactly what this book will do for the performing guitarist who has underestimated the impact of guitar amplification in providing a unique and personalized sound. As a well known working guitarist and someone who also worked for Marshall, Fliegler has the credentials and experience needed to speak on this subject with a lot of authority.

Honda S2000 Review

Honda S2000
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Carney isn't a particularly good writer but he did homework when he wrote this fairly in-depth book about the Honda S2000. I really enjoyed the introduction and history about Honda. And especially enjoyed the chapters discussing the development of the engine, chasis and transmission of the S2000.
If you've ever read in-depth books on specific automobiles published in Japan though, you'll see that this book's discussion is rather cursory. However, since there aren't too many such books--written in English on Japanese autombiles--this one does fine.
Overall, the book satisfied my curiosities about the wonderful car but, it also left me wanting to read more in two areas. First, I wanted to know more about the specific technical decisions made by Uehara and his team (stories and anectdotes and such). Second, I wish there was a chapter showing the complete performance specs of the car--and comparing it to its competitors.
Buy this book. It's a pretty good deal.

With its 2.0-liter, naturally aspirated engine delivering an astounding 240-horsepower, the Honda S2000 more than lives up to the groundswell of publicity it generated on the 1999 auto show circuit - it gives the BMW Z3 and Porsche Boxster a run for their deutschmarks. This exclusive, blow-by-blow account follows the design, testing, and development of the two-seat S2000, from the first conceptual drawings and the prototypes unveiled in 1995 to the promotional campaigns and production models that hit U.S. streets in late 1999. Lavish colour photography and never-before-published images from Honda bring to life the evolution of a stunning new, limited production sports car and a dynamic period in the company's history.

The R.A.T. Real-World Aptitude Test: Preparing Yourself for Leaving Home (Capital Ideas) Review

The R.A.T. Real-World Aptitude Test: Preparing Yourself for Leaving Home (Capital Ideas)
Average Reviews:

I got this in the mail a few weeks ago from a close family friend for a graduation gift. At first I thought it looked really stupid, but I was bored one afternoon so I just picked it up. It is so fascinating! Each section is short enough so that you can read as much or as little as you feel like. And it's really easy to skip around and only read the sections that interest you. Now I read a section or two everyday. It's a great book because it covers so much information in an interesting and funny way. The quiz format adds a little element of fun into the whole advice book thing. It's also neat how they end each section by telling you where to go for more info on something. Each section is informative and funny at the same time. And it covers really important everyday sort of stuff from basic cooking, to how to change a tire, to basic knowledge for credit cards. If you are looking for a great book for a graduate (of college or high school) this graduate is telling you to get this book!
