(More customer reviews)After reading the review that gave this book a single star, I was a little hesitant to buy it. However, I have used "Haynes" service manuals for a number of motorcycles that I've owned over the years, and found them to be very helpful in every way, so I decided to take a chance with this one. And I am glad I did.
This Manual has a lot of improvement over the ones I've previously used; aside from a fully illustrated, a step by step description of every imaginable job; it has a brief history of the Honda Motor Company, and the evolvement of the modern Honda Motorcycle. It also has a section on the tools and workshop tips, illustrating, in full color, tools required for various jobs, from basic maintenance and minor repairs, to major overhaul and specialized tools. The book also rates every job according to difficulty and level of expertise required to perform the specific job; from a simple job suitable for the novice, to the very difficult suitable only for the expert DIY or Professional, so you can judge before talking a job if it is suitable for your skill level. It also has a full color wiring diagrams for all models covered. I've found a wealth of information that is also very nicely tabulated and easy to find.
Being an experienced DIY, worked on a number of different motorcycles, performing jobs ranging from regular maintenance to engine rebuilding, I've found this book to be of great value to me; and it would be to other DIY's, if purchased for the reason the book was intended to (Repair and Maintenance).
I do not hesitate to give this book the full five stars. It sure deserves it.

(More customer reviews)As another reviewer commented, this book is good for determining whether the owner wants to try make a repair himself or bring the repair to a dealer who has specialized tools and experienced mechanics. It also gives more detail on maintenance than is provided by the manufacturer.
But the black-and-white, low contrast photos in this manual are 1930s technology. Often one cannot distinguish the blurred parts being mentioned due to the poor photography. Hello editor? Ever heard of digital photography and Photoshop? Things have changed in photography since Jimmy Olson was reporting for the Daily Planet in the Superman comics during the Great Depression.
The index is general and leaves out too many topics forcing the reader to read every page to find the topic. When this book was written on a typewriter, indeces were hard to compile; now, the lack of a detailed index means someone did not bother to run the manuscript through the index compiler in some word processing software.
The editor needs at least to footnote when models differ completely from the techniques and pictures shown. For example, the procedure for replacing the rear backup light bulb on an RX 330 2005 model is different from the procedure shown in the manual: the manual shows a simple removal of a side panel, while the 2005 model does not have a side panel on the chassis (a plastic bumper spanning the entire length of the rear tail gate has to be removed to access the bulb socket).
Haynes needs to refresh this series with new photography, fact checking and a detailed index.

Jaguar XJ6 1968 thru 1986: Series 1, 2 & 3 (Haynes Manuals) Review

(More customer reviews)Haynes Manuals have always been the best on the market. I've used them for several vehicles I have owned in the past. However, I was surprised that this one does not measure up to the rest.
For Series I and II XJ6s, this book is very good. It covers all the topics with easy step-by-step instructions and has plenty of pictures and charts to go with it. It's with the Series III cars that the book falls flat. The book was originally written for the first two series with info on the IIIs added in a later revision. It seems the section on the IIIS was more an after thought than a revision. Information is hard to locate, the pictures and charts are not as numerous and some information just isn't there.
Overall, this is a good, cheap starting point for anyone who wants to do-it-yourself info on the the XJ6. However, if you want more substance and detail, stick with the Jaguar Shop Manuals. They're pricey but worth it.

(More customer reviews)This book is not a repair manual. It is a compendium of common problems and their solutions for MGB owners. It is really well written guidebook helping one to figure out what is causing that rattle, knock or whine somewhere on the MGB. There is a mountain of useful advice and diagnosis, but don't expect this book to tell you how to fix the problem step by step. For that you need a workshop manual, but on the other hand, a workshop manual will not help you very much to find the problem. That is why this book is a gem and a must buy for any non-expert MGB owner/mechanic. I can't wait for more books in this series to be published for other vintage British sports cars.

Clean Money: Picking Winners in the Green Tech Boom Review

(More customer reviews)This book is a great summary of numerous clean technologies, spanning the range of power production (solar, wind, biofuels, geothermal, fuel cells), energy storage, energy conservation, food, water, vehicles, houses, materials, and more. John Rubino and his team must have spent an incredible amount of time digging into all the areas of clean tech, detailing their pros and cons, and surveying individual companies in each sector.
(I was able to get a sneak preview and comment on the book before its publication. But when the official version came out, I immediately re-read it, because there were so many pieces of valuable information that I had already forgotten.)
While I am a veteran in the field of alternative energy, I was surprised how many technologies are out there that I didn't fully know about. It can sometimes be overwhelming, or even uncomfortable, to hear about all these different technologies. But I am so glad that I now read about all these potential future developments. As an investor myself, it never hurts to have as much information as possible, and I don't even want to imagine what I would miss if I hadn't read the book.
John Rubino also blends the book with great macro-economics sections and investor advice. He is one of the few people right on the money, as he had predicted the real estate bust in his 2003 book, and he was consistently recommending to avoid or short homebuilders and investment banks, as in his regular interviews on Howestreet.com. He has certainly helped me and my investor group to stay clear of some of the collapses on Wall Street this year.
The current book is by no means just a promotion of all new clean technologies. On the contrary, it contains ample warnings about what can happen to overhyped technologies, what to look for, and how to avoid possible traps. It is an objective book for those interested in new technologies and investing.

Second, the quality of the "tips" Mr. Hammill provides us with is below average. The information provide[d to] the potential buyer is unadequate, when compared with the contents of the book. Example: there is no real tune-up info regarding some essential items like tuning carburettors and exhaust pipes.
Advice: a waist of money and time. A definite NO-GO!

This book, in chapters 5, 6, and 7, gives one of the best explanations of modern engine control systems I have ever read. Every major concept of OBD-II vehicles is discussed in clear precise language. These chapters alone are worth the price of the book.
My favorite feature of the book is the end of chapter questions which can be used to test your understanding of the material. And in the back of the book, you can check your answers.
Be careful when buying automotive books. Many are written by good in-shop mechanics who have poor writing skills. This book is different. Mr. Ribbens not only knows his stuff but can communicate it to others as well.

Motion Performance: Tales of a Muscle Car Builder Review

(More customer reviews)A great book and the writing is excellent. Top quality hard cover and paper stock- especially for the $. The book is basically broken down by year and model and the author goes thru what (if anything) was new from Motion for the year and then has pics and stories of certain cars. Lots of excellent high quality photographs and, as mentioned, many never before seen.
Constructive criticism: there is mention of the outrageous Motion ads (these were always in Hi Po Cars and Speed and Supercar magazine) but IIRC they only showed one. They should have included most or all of them in the book for the reader to see; the ads are the best evidence of what Motion Performance was all about. The brief history of the hi po car that was included was unnecessary: the book is about Motion Performance; we really don't need to read about the prior 60 yrs of performance cars- these were wasted pages. My biggest gripe is there are little to no production figures or even approximates; if the numbers don't exist that should've been stated; however, it appears Rosen kept his production records (although maybe not all?). They do mention the numbers for the rarest of the rare- but not, for example, how many 1969 427 camaros were produced. The lack of production figures is a glaring omission IMO. A few more paragraphs on the business itself would have been nice. It appears they ran a speed shop also but this was barely mentioned. As the business grew, approx how many employees did it have that yr? Little to no mention of the challenges/logistics of running it out of a 4? bay garage.
Overall, I loved the book.

GM Firebird 1967-81 (Chilton's Total Car Care Repair Manual) Review

Although it covers a wide range of years and several versions (mostly engine versions), the manual does a good job of covering a general maintanance and even some restoration information. A really great place to start learning about any project related to the early firebirds.

Metal Fabricator's Handbook Review

(More customer reviews)This book, in a way, is for both the beginner and the professional. The author includes a lot of helpful information for the beginner. He starts with simple and complete description of all kinds of tools that are used in fabricating metal. He starts with hand tools, moves to power hand tools, and then ends with large equipment. In the next chapter the author describes the types of metals needed to fabricate reliable auto parts. That was a good chapter. After wards, there is a chapter for each, gas welding and electric welding. The following two chapters are about basic metal forming and hammer forming. Both of those chapters are good and give a basic understanding of how metal is shaped.
There are five more chapters about sheet metal add ons, roll bars, tanks, exhaust headers, and sheet metal interior. All of those chapters were a little hard for me to follow, but I think a professional would like those chapters.
In conclusion, I find this book very helpful for the beginner; however there is a lack of information about simple detailed projects and practices.

(More customer reviews)This book is not the comprehensive guide that some people may be looking for but it does provide one more set of data points. I found the discussion of ignition options and the Miata seat conversion to be worth the price of the book while I was dismayed that the only Weber carbs reviewed were the triple 40/45 DCOE's that require extensive engine mods, with no mention of the dual DGV option that would work better on a road car. Many of the parts for suggested upgrades are from small UK suppliers that US readers may find difficult to access. If nothing else it is an interesting read and will provide food for thought while the New England permafrost sets in.
