To those considering the CHP Handbook ----
I had the opportunity to hear the author, Neil Petchers, discuss the book at New York Institute of Technology at an AEE Meeting. To say that Neil has mastery of the subject matter is an understatement. The "Handbook" is a high powered, well written work that covers many aspects of energy management and distributed generation, including:
Generator types
Cycle types
Fuel costs
Economic considerations, including utility rates
Switchgear and types of operation (islanded, grid interconnected)
As a practicing engineer involved with the electrical aspects of utility interconnection, the information on other subject areas was welcome to broaden my understanding of the complete CHP issue.
Well done Neil !
This book receives my highest rating as a world-class work on the subject.
Respectfully submitted,
Wayne Hartmann

Ford Mustang Buyer's And Restoration Guide Review

Ford Mustang Buyer's And Restoration Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Mustang represents the difference between cars designed by financial types from those designed by car types. Just before the Mustang the need for smaller cars became clear. McNamara was in charge of Ford and his answer was the Falcon. I don't know of many people who think the Falcon was the high point of Ford's history. Lee Iacocca took the basic Falcon, put new skins on it and the Mustang was born. We are now in another period where the financial types are in charge, and the blah cars and the red ink coming out of Detroit show it. ==It's been forty years since the Mustang came out in 1964, and even the original ones still look great. In fact you might argue that the originals were the best of any of the Mustangs that followed. ==This book spends over half of its pages describing the various Mustangs that were built. The back of the book talks about restoration. But don't expect details on how to restore a car. This part covers things like maintenance and where to get parts. It is fairly general in nature. After all, things like rebuilding an engine would take a whole book by itself.

It may be the most collected muscle car in history. The Ford Mustang captured the hearts and minds of the American public in 1964 with its stunning introduction.Originally designed to be an economy car of sorts, targeted to young females, the Ford Mustang quickly became the muscle car of choice for many teens and young men.As one of the industry's longest-lasting models, many people collect the Ford Mustang. With the car changing over the years, but often remaining true to its heritage, owners all have their favorite era of Mustangs. For the Mustang owner, or for someone considering the purchase and restoration of this classic muscle car, Peter and Nilda Sessler have put together a definitive guide on the subject. From the first Mustang in 1964, which some consider a 1964-1/2 model year, others a 1965 model, to the latest 2006 model, this book provides a buyer's guide for each and every year.Chapters on restoration are also included, covering engine, drivetrain, bodywork, interior, and detailing. Topics addressed include:Buyers Guide • Restoration Guide • Parts SourcesPerformance Engines • Special CarsIncludes a full-color CD-ROM with hundreds of photos from the author's personal collection of Ford Mustang photos!

This was a great book to start with, and helped me get under way with my TR4a. However, I felt the book didn't get in to enough detail to actually help with the issues one comes across during a complete restoration. Many of the obscure details were overlooked and left me having to scour message boards and piece together disparate information. I wish there was a book written by someone who has restored a Triumph and who documented the difficult details...

Mick Walker's Japanese Grand Prix Racing Motorcycles Review

Mick Walker's Japanese Grand Prix Racing Motorcycles

For motorcycle lovers this is the best book in years to explain how and why Japanese motorcycles influenced and changed our world. The modern four cylinder motorcycle engine started with Honda's 250 cc four cylinder racer from the early 60's (looks the same as todays engines). If you like small, complex, hi-tech engines (a 50cc twin, DOHC, 4 valve per cylinder racer that Honda multiplied into a 5 cylinder 125cc racer and again into six cylinder double overhead cam racer) this book is for you. It details it all with amazing photos and history of ALL of the Japanese brands all the way up to the current MOTO GP racers. Two stoke lovers will not be disappointed. It covers with amazing detail a technological era of racing and competition that shows clearly why racing improves a brand. My only complaint is that the book is not hardbound.

Why Does a Ball Bounce: 101 Questions You Never Thought of Asking

This is a great little book to leave around the "Throne Room"
to fill a few minutes. Although filled with a lot of little ponderables we have all had,it will never be the final word in this sort of thing since the world is filled with those little questions we have all wondered about. The difference here is that some of those questions get answered. Each question and answer is brief and can be covered in a couple of minutes.
A taste of the questions brought up :
"Why is the shower warmer in the middle?"
"How can a paper clip float?"
"Why do ice cubes crack in your drink?"
"What's the oldest thing alive?"
And finally that question on the cover,
"Why does a ball bounce?"
Like I said,not earth-shattering stuff,but something you've probably pondered.

Great book, chronalogically written. The author addresses the reasoning behind the changes in design and apperance through out production and is very thourough in his research. As a owner/restorer of a flathead Harley I am impressed with the spectacular color photos and the detail he has brought out about the design differences. This is not a technical book but a book that brings the reader in touch with the subject and helps them understand the wonders of these great machines. It would make a great coffee table book as the subject is of great interest to the general populatuion as antiques, art and history.

Although the Harley-Davidson 45--better known as the Flathead--was designed as an entry-level big twin, its sturdy and dependable construction and unlikely racing pedigree made it one of the most prolific production powerplants in the history of motorcycles. Built and sold from 1929 to 1973, the Flathead turned up in a wide range of Harley-Davidsons, from World War II military models to the utilitarian Servi-Car. The engine also became the power unit of choice among flat-track racers from 1934 to 1969.This Color History chronicles the entire development and production history of the Flathead, examining its application in street, racing, and military motorcycles. In addition to a selection ofarchival black-and-white photography, the author features nearly 100 modern color shots of restored Harley-Davidsons powered by the Flathead.

PC Modding For Dummies Review

PC Modding For Dummies
Average Reviews:

I'm pretty well versed in the basics of computer hardware, especially as it relates to games. I've done several motherboard and memory upgrades and a lot of video-card and hard-drive/CD-ROM drive swaps. But the really serious mods -- the windows and lights and bells and whistles -- always seemed a little beyond me.
I always thought it would be cool to have a slick-looking, modded-up PC, but I wasn't sure I could handle the work, and I didn't really want to buy a ready-made one from the handful of companies that make them (and know it was really just like a thousand others out there). I was also afraid it'd end up being too expensive to justify.
But this book convinced me I could do it, and without breaking the bank. I even used the book to convince a couple of friends to go in with me on the tools and materials, so we can share the costs. We figure if a "Dummy" can do it, then we can.
Great stuff. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking to do their own custom mods.

I found this book exceptional relative to a number of other books I have on Massey Harris tractors. It has more detail such as tire sizes and specifications in addition to serial number information even for obscure tractors such as my I244G of which only a few hunderd were made. It has some pictures, but I would not buy it for the pictures in general - still it has the only published picture of the I244. Oltrogge is the publisher of Massey Harris Collector magazine and he knows his stuff. It is a must have for any Massey collector.

Despite inconsistent support from the corporation, Kawasaki motorcycles and their riders have achieved some extraordinary results. This full-color history, with sidebars providing easily accessible information on significant riders and teams, tells the complete story of Kawasaki's involvement in road racing. The story begins with Dave Simmonds' 1969 125cc World Championship, and continues through the KR 250 and 350 that proved virtually unbeatable from 1978 to 1982, Wayne Rainey's AMA Superbike Championship in 1983 and Scot Russell's in 1993, and the Kawasaki's dominance of endurance racing in the 1990s.

I bought this book for my Dad, who got out of the Army in 1959 and went to Manhattan (dealership that no longer exists here in the DC area) to buy one with cash. He loved the car, but it plagued him with problems because it was so tiny, compared to the giant American cars that were the standard of the day (he got hit a few times). He continues to talk about it, and often, so I thought I would surprise him with it for his birthday. Ours was paperback (maybe they all are?). It's got a lot of detail for the restorer and shows nice photos. Likely talks about what to look for if you're seeking a candidate for restoration, but I didn't read it before giving it as a gift. Talks about correctness, etc. and I recall seeing some prototype shots of models that were under study.

101 Secrets a Good Dad Knows Review

101 Secrets a Good Dad Knows
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There is a sweet (but short) time when kids think their parents know everything; with this little book you will be able to put off that bittersweet (but necessary) time when they know better.
Some items seem obvious (how to throw a frisbee or climb a ladder). Some I used to know but couldn't remember specifics (how to determine the temperature by a cricket's chirps, tell time by the stars, or break in a baseball glove). Others were totally new to me (how to photograph lightning or build a snow candle). Descriptions are two to three pages. When necessary, line illustrations are used.
I'm puzzled as to why several people felt the need not only to give this book a one-star rating, but then to belittle people who live in cities or don't know everything (as they seem to). Maybe you won't enjoy this book as much as others, but giving it such a low rating and indulging in tirade is a bit hostile -- and undeserved. Maybe all 101 things won't be new to you but likely some, and perhaps more, will.
