The 6-cylinder XK engine was fitted to Jaguars for nearly 30 years, from the mid 1950s to the mid 80s. It still ranks as one of the most famous British engines having been used in a number of specials and kit cars. Here Pollard follows the XK from its initial conception and production to its final use in the mid-1980s. Pollard provides photos of the engines and the cars they powered, and offers identifying specs and production changes. Step-by-step illustrations show how to restore and rebuild an XK engine to its original specs.

Corvette Performance Projects 1968-1982 (Motorbooks Workshop) Review

Corvette Performance Projects 1968-1982 (Motorbooks Workshop)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Some automotive technical books are devoted to complex, expensive procedures modifications that sometimes require intermediate or advanced mechanical skills. It's refreshing to run across a book on basics and Corvette Performance Products 1968-1982 is exactly that.
This book covers a variety of service and maintenance tasks a DIY would perform on a 68-82 Corvette (aka "C3" or "Shark") from the very basic, such as how to jack and support your car and changing your oil and filter to more intermediate tasks such as simple body repairs, brake service and electrical troubleshooting.
Each project, and there are 31 of them, is covered by a separate chapter which explains the task in detail and illustrates it with color photos. This "modular" approach means you can either read the book cover-to-cover or use it in the shop as a supplemental service manual, looking-up information on a specific task and just reading that part.
Author, Tom Benford's easy-to-read style and his extensive, hands-on experience working on his own C3 project car make this book an excellent resource for the DIY service technician who is just starting out working on his or her own Corvette.
About the only weakness of this book is the use of the word "Performance" in its title. In 31 DIY projects suggested in this book only two have anything to do with increasing a Corvette's performance. What the publisher needs to do is simply take the word "Performance" out of the title, but leave the rest of this useful book alone.
If you're an automotive DIY and you're just getting into the Corvette hobby with a C3, next to a factory service manual, Corvette Performance Products 1968-1982 should be the most important reference in your garage. It's emphasis on basics is well worth the cover price.

Of the five generations of Corvettes, the C3 or "shark" models are among the most popular with do-it-yourselfers. Produced from 1968 all the way up to 1982, most C3 Corvettes haven't reached the collector status (and inflated prices) of earlier models. Far from being the black sheep of the Corvette family though, these attractive cars are plentiful (500,000+ were built) and affordable enough that they can be purchased, maintained, and enjoyed by a large spectrum of car lovers. The vast majority are powered by the popular 350ci small block-perhaps the most modified and successful performance engine ever.

Moto Guzzi Twins Restoration (Motorbooks Workshop)

This book is well done and has useful informantion but covers too many models to be helpful on specific models. It provides a good overview and outline procedure. I bought it to aid in the restoration of a 1973 850 Eldorado but there is little specific data on the early models. Most information seems to be on the T style Guzzis '74 to '85. Good book if you have or like Moto Guzzis but get a shop manual if you plan on doing an serious work. I have also ordered Guzziology which I've heard is excellent.

The Student Pilot's Flight Manual: From First Flight to Pilot Certificate (The Flight Manuals Series)

This Kershner Manual has long been considered one of the best study guides for private pilot training. It is packed with useful information, presented in an easy to understand fashion. I would recommend this book to anyone beginning their flight training, or to any pilot who is looking for a skill "refresher".
Kershner puts alot of emphasis on the physics involved in all of the maneuvers and flight characteristics discussed in this manual. His style of writing, while filled with technical information, is still quite fun to read. The only thing I would gripe about, and it is quite minor, is that some of the illustrations in the book are a bit outdated.

Ducati Singles Restoration (Motorbooks Workshop) Review

Ducati Singles Restoration (Motorbooks Workshop)
Average Reviews:

Now that you purchased that vintage single, what do you do? Is it worthy of a restoration, a special, or a parts bike? In Mick Walker's book, he walks you through some of the things to look out for as you evaluate a Ducati single for a project. He explains in great detail the intricate craftsmanship that went into these lovely machines (and some of their associated pains as well). But as any vintage Ducatisti knows, you need to acquire good parts and excellent resources while they're still around. If you're thinking of working on vintage singles (for the first time or for the n-th time), then this would be an excellent book to have. Why wait to pick up an excellent resource such as this? Maybe you're waiting for it to become rare, like some vintage Ducati parts and bikes, so you can pay a premium? I wouldn't and I didn't. It's an excellent resource.

Informative, and even more so to US readers, who are not really getting the true Ducati Exotica available, albeit in very small numbers, to World Ducatisti. At least through this book, some of the not so available info on the 916 family bikes is explained. What could be improved? more info on the 998 . All in all, still a great reference book for Desmoquattro fans.

Ducati stunned the world in 1988 when the struggling, small Italian firm unleashed its Desmoquattro -- 8-valve, desmodromic -- Superbike. The bike found success on the world's racetracks right from the start. Road-going versions soon carried that success to the general public, proving this design wasn't just another noisy prototype. The Superbikes -- 748, 851, 888, 916, and 996 -- are now Ducati's best-selling machines in the United States; and the Desmoquattro engine found its way into the company's more pedestrian series such as the Monster roadster and ST4 sport-tour. This is the comprehensive volume on Ducati's ultimate performance motorcycles and replaces the out-of-print Ducati Super Bikes: 851, 888, 916.

Down the Road: Genuine Mileage On Classic Motorcycles Review

Down the Road: Genuine Mileage On Classic Motorcycles

Down the Road is an entertaining book. Steve Wilson has written a series of short stories or articles concerning various classic British motorcycles. Some of them are adventure stories about rides on these bikes. Others are historical in nature, based on interviews with individuals involved in the post-WWII British motorcycle industry. For those of us interested in these bikes and the collapse of that industry, it is a must read. The illustrations are good too.

How to Restore and Modify Your Porsche 914 and 914/6 (Motorbooks Workshop) Review

How to Restore and Modify Your Porsche 914 and 914/6 (Motorbooks Workshop)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"How to Restore & Modify Your Porsche 914 & 914/6" doesn't tell how to do either. Its best section describes the many places to look for rust when buying a 914. Most of the rest is filled with generalisms and pablum, much of which is not even specific to 914s. The book is filled with annoying technical errors that individually seem minor, but are collectively inexcusable and indicate insufficient research. Example: the author claims that compared to the stock 17mm master cylinder, the larger (19mm) master cylinder's "main advantage is to increase the brake pressure of the system." In fact, for a given force applied to the brake pedal, it does the oppposite. Another example: the author cautions us that the terms "backspacing" and "offset" of wheels are often confused, then he gives an incorrect definition of "offset." Thanks for muddying the pool of knowledge!
On modifying the cars, we are advised that certain components can be replaced with better ones, but the author does not tell what parts to buy, how to install them, or what gains in performance we can expect.
There are many better books on 914s available. "914 Tech Tips 700" by George A. Hussey, IV, gives practical maintenance advice. "The Porsche 914 & 914/6" by Dr. Brett Johnson gives an excellent model year history and shows what parts are original. Neither of these books was mentioned in Mr. Paternie's list of suggested reading. Neither of these books goes into modification in any depth. For that, buy "Up-Fixin der Porsche" (11 volumes) from the Porsche Club of America, or subscribe to Grassroots Motorsports magazine.

Turfgrass Maintenance Reduction Handbook: Sports, Lawns, and Golf Review

Turfgrass Maintenance Reduction Handbook: Sports, Lawns, and Golf
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Golf course superintendants and turfgrass managers all seem to concur that the major expense of any professional turf is not the initial cost of construction, but rather, the cost and commitment required for its maintenance.
Few textbooks specifically address this issue, but Dr. Brede's book does. He presents, in great detail, and with a view towards educating the reader, why the choice of a turfgrass is critical, how to make that choice, and how to maintain it with less-intensive management practices than may currently be in vogue.
Subsequent chapters develop strategies for reducing maintenance, based on the results of current research: use less fertilizer, use less water, and lighten mowing. These are presented after a step-by-step procedure for establishing/renovating a turf area, as well as a practical treatment on turf soils, discussing issues such as thatch, soil compaction, and the effects of salts. He also presents strategies for controlling insects/pests on turfgrasses, many of which employ changes in management practices rather than application of chemicals. Also, don't miss the appendix, which is an exhaustive list of unconventional turfgrasses.
Dr. Brede's advice is based on his own field experience, combined with his education and research in the turfgrass sciences, and may be some of the best-kept secrets in the turfgrass industry.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is planning a new construction or the reconstruction of a turf area-choose the correct turfgrass for your site, and maintain it with a less-intensive management program. You'll likely spend less money and have more time to enjoy using the turf than struggling with its maintenance

Alcohol and Substance Abuse: A Handbook for Clergy and Congregations
Average Reviews:

This book is an excellent resource for understanding the entire dynamics of addictions, whether it be alcoholism, sex, food, smoking etc. It has been used in teaching institutions to help those with the addiction and those affected by someone elses addiction. It gives facts about how ministers and priests go into the ministry looking for something to fulfill them as many are already in a "broken" state of being. It helps us understand the far reaching characteristics of the insidious disease and how it takes over all aspects of a person's life. It has helped me understand how I chose the person I married. It also became clear as I remembered how I watched the congregation in the churches, that had so called "recovering" alcoholics(they were not in recovery--they were fooling everyone who chose to believe them)in them and how they divided the congregation as some people enabled the priest to continue to hide his secret until the entire church atosphere was engulfed in this one persons life. Through enabling the alcoholic person more damage was done than if it came out in the open right away, and the person was told that it was expected that he get help or leave. So many lives impacted through secrets and lies instead on openness and honesty. This book has helped my family and friends so much I hope you give it the chance it so richly deserves! Tucson

How does a minister respond to a cry for help when the concern is alcohol or drug abuse? With one out of eight adults in the country suffering from alcohol dependency or drug abuse and one out of four families distressed by someone's use of chemicals, clergy frequently deal with related problems whether they are willing and capable, or not. How does a congregation respond to a minister who might be suffering from chemical dependency? Clergy are just as likely to suffer from the disease as any lay person, and yet denominational leaders and superiors, called upon by concerned members of the congregation, may feel powerless to discern the truth and act.Though parishioners are often called on to deal with the chemically dependent person or those suffering from the fallout, few are trained in this area. And because few clergy are trained as treatment specialists, often they only make the problem worse through personal, empathetic involvement. Instead, Alcohol and Substance Abuse shows how clergy and laity can be pastoral problem solvers, not practitioners, through intervention and referral.Throughout, the aim is to provide spiritual answers to the spiritual questions of dispirited people. This is a how-to handbook with specific descriptions and suggestions, featuring a comprehensive list of organizations and agencies equipped to help.
