Even if it were true, it's unnecessary to cram the sentiment into every paragraph. There are also some factual liberties taken in the "turbo vs. nitrous" section which I found to be rather curious and unnecessary...

How To Build a Cheap Hot Rod (Motorbooks Workshop) Review

(More customer reviews)When I read the title of this book I thought it meant How to build Hot Rods cheaply. I was wrong, the title is correct How to Build a Cheap Hot Rod. The author buys the cheapest fiberglass T body and chassis, uses a V-6 Ford engine and spends over $16,000 to build just what he started with - the cheapest hot rod kit available. I thought it interesting that he spent $300 on an engine and tranny, but $1100 on a 9 inch rear end. I think he'd have been happier in the long run spending a touch more on the engine and using a less expensive differential. He had to have someone else do his welding (if you want to build a hot rod, spend the time to learn to weld).
There are no money saving tips here, he buys all his parts off the shelf for real money.
When all is said and done, he has spent $16,000 on an unpainted (even though he bought the paint), fiberglass T, with an ugly $300 engine/tranny. He'd be lucky to sell it for $8000. You can do better without his help.

Diagrams, drawings and photos tell you what to do and why - or why not to do it. Mr. Vizard presents everything within the context of what is practical and worthwhile for "streetability," vs. what else might make sense for all-out racing performance. What a great book for anyone who wants to add HP, even those with no idea where to begin!

Big-Block Chevy Marine Performance Review

(More customer reviews)Finally, someone has written a technical manual for those of us who like to fiddle with modern gasoline marine inboard and I/O engines. This book has been long overdue! There exists a plethora of books on building up hot-rod automobile engines, but the marine hot-rod has been mostly untouched. Dennis Moore does an excellent job presenting the subtle differences between a car engine and a marine engine, from the carburetor, intake manifold, heads, cam, to the critical exhaust manifolds and marine headers. Though this book is based on Chevy big blocks, the principles are easily adaptable to all makes of marine engines.
I am currently building up a Chevy SB 350 to a 383 "stroker" and have found this book indispensable. I highly recommend it for anyone who tinkers with marine inboards! Nice job Dennis!

The text reminds me of lots of magazine build-up articles, "disassemble this part, check clearance on that part, we used XYZ heads, etc." I would rate the information just average. On the other hand, the photography is EXCELLENT and all in color. The book is almost worth the price just for that, but don't buy it with the idea of learning a lot. Frank Oddo and Tex Smith's books are better in that regard.

I'm no mechanic extraordinaire but I have always wanted to have a fun car to work on so I bought a 1990 Miata. Since purchasing the car I have been through several of the projects listed in his book. Each time it was Keith's guidance and experience that made me feel comfortable with what I was doing. It is really nice to have re-assurance when you are drilling holes in your car and or bashing parts of it with a hammer. The older cars like mine don't always give up easily like the newer ones.
Thanks to Keith my car has achieved a level beyond stock that I'm very happy with. The overall cost/effort involved was quite reasonable and that was important. Keith does a good job letting you understand the cost (money, effort, etc..) versus reward (power, responsiveness, etc..). This lets you pick the projects that help you change your car into something that better suits you within limits that suit you.
I strongly recommend this book to any Miata owner with an interest in maintaining/modifying his own car. With this book in hand it is very unlikely my near 14 year old car will ever be back in the dealer shop again.

The current printing has no updates and lists some catalogues as being 50 cents. The information is what most people will find interesting. Once you understand what Bill is talking about you can learn more by participating in online VW forums like the Cal-Look Forum on the net. There are lots of people out there willing to help with advice and information.

NO detailed dyno tests in this book and it might make inexperienced owners want to build a drag race engine for the street, in which case they will encounter lots of problems as drag engines are not meant for street use. Nice to have though.

(More customer reviews)There's not another small-block Chevy book that does a better job explaining how to build a small-block Chevy and the best products to use under a certain budget. This book gave me no-BS information that made it far easier to select the best KB pistons, Scat crank, and Scat rods for my 350 build-up. There's a huge amount of information and flow data on aftermarket heads from RHS, Dart, Edelbrock and some others. With the all the information, it made it easy to pick out heads with the right chamber size. But what I really liked about the book are the charts and information for picking out a cam. Vizard get into the nitty gritty of cam selection and the charts are awesome. In the charts, you find your application, engine size, and from there you can select the cam. And it gives you some stroker application.

There are tons of tricks ad tips in here that aren't HIGH DOLLAR jobs. Simple and easy things to do during your build up that will save you hours trying to go back and fix things later. It should be called How to do it right the First time! It is one of few auto books with real knowledge in it that skips the technical jargon and flashy billet parts and suggests things that will work!
You will be pleased with it wether you are building a Baja, Street Bug, Rail Buggy or Dune Buggy. The air cooled VW motor still rules an always will!

(More customer reviews)While the graphic presention in this book is excellent, the content is sorely lacking in detail. This is more of an idea book than an instructional one. Their rating system for degree of difficulty is completely innaccurate. Removing front coil springs is rated as more difficult than tasks like replacing the upper control arms (which require removing the front coil springs!) or even front rack and pinion conversions, which are extremely difficult. If you are looking for ideas on some possible projects, this is an OK book, although the information is widely available elsewhere. If you are looking for in depth instruction, this one is all sizzle and no steak.

101 Performance Projects for Your BMW 3 Series 1982-2000 (Motorbooks Workshop) Review

(More customer reviews)Wayne Dempsey's new book should be a companion to, not a substitute for, the Bentley repair manual. Wayne tries to generalize a how-to article enough to cover 18 years and 5 different engines. It can be annoying, although a few of the projects are car- or engine-specific. Most such projects are specific to the e36 cars, rather than e30s. For non-specific projects, e36 photos are generally used. If you have an e36, the photos alone are worth the price of the book. They are much better than the Bentley. Even if you own an e30, the photos are still very helpful.
The great thing is it has a more narrative form than the Bentley, and explains a little more of the why and how, rather than just step-by-step instuctions. Wayne also spends a little more time talking about logistics. For example, the Bentley hardly even mentions the horrible top-bolts holding the transmission to the engine, but this book spends a couple paragraphs going over techniques and possible combination of tools to remove them.
Also, the word "performance" in the title is a little misleading. Most of the projects are general maintenance items.
Bottoms line -- it's a nice book to have around for any 3-series DIYer, and arguable a must-have for a e36 owner.
