This book provides the necessary information to get you going toward developing or improving your serious engine building skills. What it doesn't and shouldn't have are the figures for your particular combination. For example: If you are building a small block Ford, it doesn't tell you that your pin height should be XYZ with ABC stroke. What it does do is tell you how use the precision tools required to assemble cylinder heads, short block (including degreeing your cam) and all of the computational formulas needed for compression ratio, CID, etc..etc.
The material is presented well and is full of lots of good information without the common bias for a particular brand engine . Even though Small Block Chevy parts are pictorialized throughout the book, the text and information apply to any motor. An example describing how to check pushrod length and rocker arm geometry alone is worth $....
Impressive, fact-filled read of Engine Blueprinting without forcing you to go step-by-step, but giving them to you in logical order.

I bought this book because I am nuts about cars, but in addition to that, I am also a professional in a technical field. I used this book as a reference during the writing of my doctoral thesis. I found that the Bosch Automotive Handbook had a very comprehensive section on hardness testing, which I used extensively in my research at that time. I am also using this book in calculating the suspension geometry for a car project at home - I use it at work so much that I'm considering the purchase of a second copy for home use.
The book is full of topics that are useful to anyone with a technical background who is interested in the general construction of complex things with moving parts. There is a section devoted to the "tightening of threaded fasteners", where all of the specifications of fasters are described and the forces that are involved are written out. There are fairly detailed sections on welding and other joining methods. There are sections on wheel offset, tire construction, NVH measurements (noise, vibration, and harshness), wear testing, fuel efficiency, coatings of surfaces, vehicle dynamics, the balance of forces in a piston engine, and fuel injection. There are a great couple of pages on "empirical values and data for calculation" which compares parameters between engine types, such as Diesel, gas, Stirling, and rotary engines. There are many pages dedicated to the calculation of engine parameters such as displacement, compression ratio, final compression temperature, piston acceleration, fuel supply, and piston pressure. I have actually used some of these once or twice and I love the fact that I have them on hand, even if I don't really need them.
Ever wonder what the difference between a screw-type and Roots-type supercharger is? It's in this book. Ever wonder how a wastegate works? It's right here. Fuel injector design, spark plug gaps... all of it is in here.
The best thing about the book is that even if it does not offer a lot of detail on a particular topic, there is at least a paragraph devoted to the subject with enough information and context so that the reader is armed with the tools to search for more meaningful literature on the topic.

One gripe: at least in this edition, I don't see anything useful on controller area networks (CAN) or how one goes about programming them or controlling them. CAN is becoming an essential part of automotive manufacturing and I would expect that someday Bosch will cover this topic more thoroughly.
With that said, I consider this book to be one of the "must haves" for technical reference books. With a recent edition of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, Perry's Chemical Engineer's Handbook, Mark's Standard Handbook for Mechanical Engineers, Machinery's Handbook, Metals Handbook, and the Bosch Automotive Handbook, one person has an excellent overview of the entire Industrial Revolution. I call this library of books the "Build-Your-Own-Civilization Library". If you like handbooks (I cherish them), get this one, then go buy the others.

While not an expert, I am also not a novice engine builder. So, buying a book titled "Pro Engine Blueprinting" I had certain expectations. Mainly, I expected to see either an intelligent discussion of advanced concepts or at least the specific viewpoint of an expert on these advanced topics. Instead, the book is at a very basic level. It does describe some rudimentary aspects of engine building in a very basic manner. The editing is poor and there are many typos. I do not reccomend this book. But if you are a novice and still want it, I am selling my copy!

While the author covers components, principles of operation and general theory, there is very little information concerning the art of tuning a four stroke engine. For someone new to engines in general it may not be a bad investment. If you're fairly knowledgeable already and are seeking to expand your own abilities, you're not likely to find much worthwhile advice here.

This is a good book for identification of your bow-tie small-block, although there's some lack of info regarding the first 265 engines and the '57 fuel injected 283 engines. Handy for who needs the full history about the small-block left on the back of the garage. There's even some info about the 400ci engines.

The book is not specific to make, model or year nor is it intended to serve as an installation guide for any specific vehicle. Ford is well represented only because they are so popular. It is a "handbook" that compares the principals of forced induction to natural aspiration. The book describes in laymen's terms the dynamic changes that occur when forced induction is applied to any internal combustion engine. The table of contents includes Fundamentals, Engine Preparation, Superchargers, Turbochargers, Nitrous Oxide Injection, Fuel Systems, Electronic Controls, etc. The principals of forced induction apply equally to all internal combustion engines including Chevrolet. Further, the technical information is based on sound engineering theory not advertising hype.

The synopsis given above doesn't lie. There's a lot of reference to carburetion for comparison, and often the tone of the book is toward converting a carbureted engine into a fuel-injected one, but the subject coverage is comprehensive. It covers a wide range of electronics: factory & aftermarket engine control computers, sensors, ignition systems, etc., along with the injector technology itself. Formulas for power output vs fuel consumption -> sizing injectors, etc. Excellent.

If your interested in small blocks just buy it. David Vizard is one of the best writers out there and this book has so much useful information that it is a "must have" for any SBC fan. I borrowed and read twice in a week it before decided that I had to have a copy of my own. Its that good! His book, Building SBC's on a budget is another one that everybody needs to have. I would say buy it first and this one second though. David is a Writer, Engine builder, Racer, Machinist, owns a dyno and has done it all his life. Not like most books that are written by Geeks that have never got there hands dirty. This guy speaks to us,,, the gear-heads. He is the modern day Smokey Yunick but instead of drinking, smoking, and chasing whores, (not that there is anything wrong with that), David has spent much time writing what he has learned so that we all can use it. Order it and don't look back. If all the Small Block Chevy books out there these are the first two that you need.

This book is very well written. It handles a lot of the basic turbo knowledge that most enthusiast's need to know. What was dissapointing was that there is no real turbo sizing theory, fan blade effientcy equations or a lot of detail in a few other areas. None the less, the book is only about turbo systems and is the easiest to read. This is a great book to read. You may also want to get "Turbochargers" from Hugh MacInnes, it's also a must have, but is out of date and is not very useful on the modern EFI machines. I do like "Force Induction" by A. Graham Bell. A book that is much more knowlegable on the subject of performance turbos. It's always a good idea to get opinions of other great writers.

I'm an engine builder/head porter with approximately 30 years of experience. I bought the book because I trust the information give by the author, Harold Bettes. After reading the book I found the approach of giving many different references for formulas to be a sensible way of helping to narrow specifics used for development. The book was well written and had an easy to use method for describing not only the math but also what the numbers used in equations represent. I realize that it would be difficult at best for any author to write all the years of experience that Mr. Bettes has in just one book. I feel that he did a great job to cover as much as he could, touching on current issues that engine builders are faced with without loosing focus on the basics . After reading the book, I found that it would be helpful to both experienced and unexperienced gearheads. The book is a great read, and should be found in the library of all respected head porters and engine builders.

I have a few books from the "Motorbooks Workshop" series and I am happy with all of them - in fact I'm kicking around the idea of building a library of them for myself, as they are all instant reference books full of valuable information. I could waste a weekend away just thumbing through them.
THIS BOOK is one of the best automotive "how-to" books I have ever read. Let me tell you why. I have been shying away from stand alone engine management in my search for power-adders on my cars. One of my cars is a mk2 Supra with a tired 5MGE engine and I've been wondering how long it will be before I have to do something about it. There aren't a lot of aftermarket companies out there who work with this engine. Do I rebuild the 5M with stock parts, new gaskets, and maybe a mild port and polish? This would save me the trouble of worrying about engine management, and it would be cheap(er). Or do I swap in the turbo 3.0 inline six 7MGTE from the later mk3? If I do this, I'll need to source a complete wiring harness, and what if the wires are cut, and then I can't figure out how to get it running? Or do I go crazy and swap a twin turbo 2JZGTE from a mk4? Same problem there. Or do I try something completely different and modify the 5M with independent throttle bodies, or build a grassroots centrifugal supercharger system for it? Or better yet, custom fab a subframe and shove an LS1 under the hood? I'm not worried about the fabrication, I'm worried about the wiring! Now it's not just a matter of finding a parts car with an intact wiring harness... I need to build an engine management system and that stuff is... well, scary. I don't know where to start, and I'm not ready to lay down the coin for some TEC III or Megasquirt Whatever thing if I don't know what I'm trying to buy. And the various forums I subscribe to can't offer me enough hands-on information to make an educated decision. I'm not going to pay $2000 for something just `cause everybody likes the cold air intakes made by the same company.
Behold! From behind a curtain Jeff Hartman steps forward with this book. Chapter 1, starting on page 14 outlines the basics of my system in a clear and concise manner. Step 1: Get fuel to the engine compartment. Step 2: Build an intake manifold and throttle. Step 3: Figure out a way to meter fuel. Step 4: Turning the injectors on and off. Step 5: Telling the computer what's going on in the engine. Step 6: Startup. Step 7: Naming the system and making it smart. Step 8: How did we do? Step 9: Revisionist designs.
Each step is explained in simple and effective detail. Yes, I had grasped these concepts conceptually before owning this book, but it is very nice to have them laid before me so neatly. There is good data in these first few pages. For instance, did you know that injectors should be designed around an 80% duty cycle? Also, most injectors cannot provide accurate flow below a threshold of 1.3 milliseconds open time. Jeff told me so. Perhaps this is in my copy of the Bosch Automotive Handbook, but Jeff's book has prettier pictures.
Jeff also told me that an air/fuel mixture of 12.2 is optimum, which I had heard before. But Jeff told me *why*. Nobody has done that before. After explaining most of these basics, Chapter 2 is a breakdown of the functions of an ECU. Jeff doesn't just devote a sentence to the ECU, more than a page of tiny text is devoted to description of components of a simple ECU. He then explains the advantage of calibrated engine management over mechanical fuel injection - his goal is to teach you how to be able to drive your car on the track *and* the street, without the necessity of keeping the revs up and dreading every stoplight.
Occasionally Hot Rod Magazine will have a column on "term of the month" or something like that. I like Hot Rod a lot. It's a good magazine that gets right down to the nuts and bolts of automotive enthusiasm. In these short technical columns, they will explain "volumetric efficiency" or some other complicated term. That stuff is all here, in much more detail. There are even *equations*. Who doesn't like equations?
Chapter 3 is dedicated to sensors. Eleven dense pages of information on sensors. Jeff explains the function of every sensor in detail, including MAF, O2, crank position, throttle position, temperature sensors (for air, gas, and oil), torque and pressure sensors... you get it. Jeff isn't short-changing us. It's all here. I was flipping through Chapter 3 and stopped at a familiar picture. "Hey," I thought. "That looks just like my MAF for my Volkswagen VR6." Yep, it's a Bosch design, and Jeff knows all about it.
Chapter 4: Actuator Systems. Jeff tells us all about the control of electronic fuel injectors - how they are built, equations for flow rates, and a huge chart of fuel injector specs from practically every Bosch, Nippon Denso, Lucas, or AC Delco injector on the market. Jeff doesn't care if you like American cars, German cars, Japanese cars, British cars, Italian cars, or whatever. He just likes cars. Me too. That's why I am in love with this book.
With most of the fundamentals out of the way, Chapter 5 jumps right into "Hot Rodding EFI Engines." The first page has a picture of a supercharged LT1, and the second page of the chapter has a picture of a Porsche 968 turbo. Buy copies of Corky Bell's forced induction books in addition to Jeff's book, and you'll know all you need to know. In this chapter, he talks about the stuff we all like to talk about. Supercharging, turbocharging, nitrous, big lopy cams, different intake manifolds, exhaust, fuel delivery components, all that. He even devotes a little time to hot rodding Chevy's TPI and Ford's MPI.
Chapter 6: Recalibrating Factory ECUs. This is the black magic I wanted to know about. Bam! Right away Jeff has a table of cars and available recalibration systems for those cars. It's not just the basic cars either. The list includes Honda, BMW, Buick, Ford, Chevy, VW, Nissan, Porsche, Toyota, Mazda, and Mitsubishi. Pick an engine, and Jeff knows about it. Audi 1.8T? Grand National turbo V6? Ford 5.0 or 4.6? It's in there. Then he shows how he removed a chip from a Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 and learned to crack it. And look! A list of websites for hacking software. Jeff, you are the man. You have brightened my life.
I am writing too much. And I'm only a quarter into the book. He tells us more about piggy back computers, stand alone systems (AEM, DTA, Autronic, APEXi, Accel - an incredibly comprehensive list of stand alone manufacturers and their kit specifications -prices too!!), swapping factory engine management systems, converting engines to EFI, common installation and startup problems, building intake manifolds (with equations!), EMS tuning on the dyno and troubleshooting (and the best tools to do it), and emissions and OBD systems.
The last ~1/3 of the book is detailed descriptions of installations on a bunch of project cars (including a triple turbo Jaguar, a Lotus, a turbo Honda CRX, a twin-charged Toyota V6, a Golf 1.8T, and a '55 Chevy with a twin turbo small block). The project car sections are neat, but Jeff, I doubt that Golf 1.8T made 335 rear-wheel horsepower. But I'd believe you if you said "335 front-wheel horsepower." That's pretty much the only error I found.
If you are into cars, and you are building a car of your own with a semi-exotic forced induction or naturally aspirated engine, get ahold of this book. It's the best I've seen.
