Saturday Night Dirt: A MOTOR Novel Review

Saturday Night Dirt: A MOTOR Novel

It's not NASCAR or the Indy 500. It is small town, dirt track racing. There's dust in the air, and colorful characters racing their cars around the track. There's plenty of competition, an intense desire to win, and enough mystery and intrigue to keep even non-racing fans on the edge of their seats.
SATURDAY NIGHT DIRT is set at Headwaters Speedway in Minnesota. Mel Walters and her father, Johnny Walters, are struggling to keep their little race track in business. Johnny, once a driver himself, is now confined to a wheelchair after a tragic accident years ago. Mel's mother needed only a few short weeks to determine she couldn't stay married to a man in a wheelchair, so Mel and her dad have been on their own for quite some time.
Still in high school, Mel acts as track manager, and she is probably the sole reason for the track's continued success. The story begins and ends on one Saturday. Because of Mel's drive and determination, it's a Saturday that makes history for the track and just might breathe some new life into it.
Other members of the cast of characters include several young racers like Trace, Amber, and Beau hoping to make their mark in racing. There's Patrick, who handles parking and sings the national anthem before the night's racing begins. Maurice is a retired navy man who handles the signal flags like a pro. There are also the down-and-out racers like Sonny from the local reservation who lack the funds to really be taken seriously by the other competitors. Even the ever present threat of bad weather becomes a player in the non-stop action at the track. Each plays a part in the Saturday night excitement and helps make the story a real page-turner.
SATURDAY NIGHT DIRT is billed on the cover as "A Motor Novel." Hopefully, that means it is the first of many more. Weaver's book is especially excellent for reluctant guy readers, even if they don't have a special interest in the sport of dirt track racing.

It's a sizzling summer Saturday, and Headwaters Speedway has suddenly become the place to be. Thanks to rainouts across the state, this small-town dirt track is drawing both big-time stock cars and local drivers. There's Trace Bonham, whose Street Stock Chevy is acting up in a big way. And Beau Kim, whose "stone soup" Modified has been patched together from whatever parts he could scrape up. And no one could forget Amber Jenkins, a strawberry blonde who has what it takes to run rings around them all. Keeping everyone on track is Melody Walters, who knows that the impending rain might be exactly what they need to keep her father's speedway afloat—or sink it for good.In Will Weaver's high-revving novel, the first in the Motor series, a cast of car-obsessed teens and adults are all out to prove themselves, both on and off the quarter-mile track, as they move through their day on a collision course to meet on Saturday night dirt.

Junior Dragster Dreams: How Sam Found His Own Ride

First full disclosure: I never would have read this book if I hadn't known the author with whom I've worked off and on for years. I wasn't the least bit interested in drag racing and I don't have children.
But, I loved it! I couldn't put it down. I laughed; I cried. The back of the book says it's for ages 8-12, but I think it's for all ages. There's something there for everyone to learn and love. I highly recommend it!

Ducati Belt-Drive Two-Valve Twins: Restoration and Modification (Authentic Restoration Guides) Review

Ducati Belt-Drive Two-Valve Twins: Restoration and Modification (Authentic Restoration Guides)
Average Reviews:

The following review is from The Ducatis Unlimited Connection web site (www.duc.org):
There are basically two types of Ducati riders: Those that just ride the motorcycles, and those that are also driven by a 'need to know;' who relish every savory (and occasionally unsavory) detail about these extraordinary machines. If you are the latter type this book is a must have.
Although billed on its cover as an "Authentic Restoration Guide" this book is actually much more. It is a cornucopia of interesting details -- seemingly every detail! -- about the entire line of belt-drive two-valve twins from the earliest pre-production Pantahs down to the latest Monsters, STs, and fuel-injected Supersports.
And, if the breadth of coverage seems amazing (and it is) even more so is the way that Ian presents it. Not just as a lengthy compendium of facts and data, but as an unfolding story of development and change. One filled with cues and, yes, the occasional miscue. Fascinating!
But it's billing as a Restoration and Modification Guide is, none-the-less, correct. Want to know the original color or decal placement on a `82 Pantah? You'll find it here. Interested in learning recommended methods for dealing with the flat spot produced by a Paso 750's auto-type carburetor? That is here, too. Also included -- many for the first time -- are accurate production and distribution figures for each and every model, along with charts that list factory correct tuning data, and such esotery as carburetor specifications, gear ratios, and camshaft valve timing for each model and year. Whew!
Filled with scores of photographs and interesting diagrams, this is a book to read, study, and enjoy. DUC Recommended!

Month-by-Month Gardening in the Carolinas Review

Month-by-Month Gardening in the Carolinas

The original issue of Month By Month doesn't have the glossy pages, color photo's or planting zone maps of the new Revised Version but I am glad I bought the Original Version. It may not be available much longer.
Only the new Revised version is now available locally in retail book and home improvement stores but reading the descriptions I notices the Original version is slightly bigger and has 80 more pages.
After receiving the Original version in the mail I compared the two versions. The text is nearly identical but spread out with more white space and indexing in the Original version. All in all the original version seems easier to read with matte pages and spread format.
The Revised version has removed the chapter on houseplants, combined warm season and cool season grasses into one chapter and removed plant information tables for individual varieties for each chapter. These tables are for annuals, perennials, roses, bulbs, vegetables, houseplants, lawn grasses, shrubs, trees, vines, ground covers and aquatic plants. They contain much useful information such as common and botanical names, planting times, hardiness zones, light requirements, bloom season and relevant comments. Although the variety lists are limited they cover the most common plants and are a good general reference.

Excellent book on rebuilding the classic Jaguar XK engine in it's various permutations. Some history on the development as well. A real inside look at all of the internals of this engine. As a bonus, there is also a quick teardown and rebuild of much of the independent rear suspension unit. Covers everything except the actual rebuild of the differential. Also a bonus section on the SU carburettor. This book is required reading if you plan to do any of your own engine work. The photos are first rate, many in color. This is a collection of articles that previously appeared in Jaguar Quarterly (now Jaguar World) Magazine
