Aircraft Inspection, Repair & Alterations: Acceptable Methods, Techniques, and Practices (FAA Handbooks) Review

Aircraft Inspection, Repair and Alterations: Acceptable Methods, Techniques, and Practices (FAA Handbooks)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book contains two FAA Advisory Circulars. The first, "Ácceptable Methods, Techniques, and Practices - Aircraft Inspection and Repair" is up to date. The second, "Ácceptable Methods, Techniques, and Practices - Aircraft Alterations" was superseded by a new version published by the FAA on 03/03/2008.
For an in-the-shop reference the first part (2/3rds of the book)is current and very valuable.

This book is an authoritative course book for students working toward an Aircraft Maintenance Engineers Licence.
E.H.J.Pallett has wide experience as a professional aeronautical engineer, training instructor, and surveyor in airworthiness requirements with the United Kingdom Civil Aviation Authority. As he takes you through the basics of electrical systems, the complexity of these essential but hidden parts of the aircraft becomes apparent. The layout is good, the diagrams are clearly labelled, and the circuits are shown as simply as possible. The overall effect is to place the reader in touch with the electrical systems of the modern aircraft.

Illustrated Buyer's Guide to Used Airplanes Review

Illustrated Buyer's Guide to Used Airplanes

I picked up this book thinking that it would be a price guide. It isn't. To be sure, it has a small section giving a range of prices for various aircraft.
The main part of the book is a guide to the purchase of used airplanes. It's oriented to the smaller types that the individual owner would be likely to find interesting and available.
About a third of the book is on general subjects like do you really want to buy, deciding on the type of airplane, searching for the right plane, inspecting it -- all the things you want to consider regardless of the type of plane that you want. Then there's another large section that covers the various aircraft you're likely to find available and interesting. This is broken down by type. Two passenger, four place, and some interesting categories he calls Complex Airplanes, Heavy Haulers, and Affordable Twins. Within the category he lists the planes by manufacturer and gives some description of the various models and versions produced. I had to read the closing section here on War Birds. He basically said that I can't afford one. He's right. A P-47 uses a gallon of 100 Octane (at about $5 a gallon) every thirty seconds. Finally there is an extensive set of appendicies that cover everything from accidents to the pricing section mentioned earlier.
This is a general guide to buying an airplane which covers a lot of the basics. It'll give you the background information you need to even think about buying.

Airplane Maintenance & Repair: A Manual for Owners, Builders, Technicians, and Pilots Review

Airplane Maintenance and Repair: A Manual for Owners, Builders, Technicians, and Pilots
Average Reviews:

This appears to be a contract book where the publisher comes up with a title that will sell and then contracts someone to write the book. It is disorganized, and the different chapters vary greatly in quality. An entire chapter consist almost completely of text lifted out of FAA FARs and advisory circulars with no interpretation or commentary between listings. Some chapters are dedicated to discussing engine operation and electronics, but cover it in a more cursory manor than most private pilot study books. The chapter on electrical systems states several times that electrical systems travel at the speed of light in a wire when they travel closer to 2/3 of this speed. This is a nit, but goes to show how little effort was put into constructing this book. I found the book overall almost completely useless.
