(More customer reviews)Mastering Javascript is an excellent book for a newcomer to JavaScript, but I find that its value for updating my previous knowledge of JavaScript was much less than I expected. The book is a hefty 1100+ pages, and they avoid providing beginner's information on HTML, thankfully. Yet the language in the book is somewhat dry, even considering normal standards of writing in similar style books.
The book is good for those who already have a background in programming, and are interested in venturing into JavaScript. There are extended JavaScript examples in the book, and sample code is provided on a companion CD.
A very appreciated section on XML is included, and this was the section I focused on the most. Yet it doesn't develop it as much as I would have expected it to, considering how much it had already done with previous topics.
All in all, I would have enjoyed it more if this had been my first introduction to JavaScript. As is, it is still a good ride, though not as satisfying the second time around.

The book is very well written; as good as it gets in terms of clarity and explanatory depth.
As with any book it depends on what you are looking for. Don't buy it if you're looking for specific information on tuning your 2008 Mustang fuel injection; it isn't that kind of book.
If you really want a good foundation knowledge this a very good book. Obviously if you are looking for information on the specific fuel injection systems listed then it is even that much better. But this is one of those rare books that give you so much background on the principles that it is an informative read.

Embedded Systems Design: An Introduction to Processes, Tools and Techniques Review

(More customer reviews)This book is not about writing software for embedded systems. If that is what you want to learn about, you should read David Simon's book, "An Embedded Software Primer". However, this book does an excellent job of covering the PROCESS of designing embedded systems, from microprocessor selection to system debugging, and discusses the many engineering tradeoffs that need to be made in the design of real-world systems.
As a useful trilogy, I would recommend:
1) David Simon's book for learning how to write embedded software.
2) Jack Ganssle's "The Art of Designing Embedded Systems" for tips, tricks, and strategies on being a good embedded software designer.
3) This book, for understanding the engineering decisions that need to be made in the design of an embedded system, and for learning about the debugging tools and techniques available as well.

Programming Android Review

mobile networking. Though I have a strong Java and mobile programming
background, I have no familiarity with Android. I needed to get up
to speed quickly, and thought I would go with an OReilly book, usually
a good bet.
I ended up using the intro to quickly
get started with eclipse, and then moved into the view section to put
together an interface without much trouble (useful examples),
and am looking at the
advanced sections to learn about Android's NFC feature. The 3rd
section is enlightening, saving me from some design mistakes that I was
sure to make. I did, however, feel that some of the information in the
later chapters was over
my head, targeted at an audience with more outside knowledge.
Overall, the book is both good at introducing the basics of Android,
and covering the more advanced topics.
