This is an important and timely book. David Sandalow is to be commended for writing a well-researched, non-partisan book that offers a candid assessment of our addiction to oil; the adverse consequences that flow from that addiction, and a realistic assessment of various policy options regarding liquid fuel substitutions that could, and should, be vigorously pursued by the next administration.

The introduction of "Freedom From Oil" makes several important points, whic include:
"First, oil is everywhere. Everyone reading this book will use oil-directly or indirectly-in the next day.
...Second, drivers have no substitutes for oil.
....Third, our political dialogue about oil is stuck in the 1970s, focusing on just one part of a larger problem.
....To become independent of foreign oil, we must become independent of oil. That doesn't mean no oil in our vehicles. It means giving drivers a choice between oil and other fuels.
This conclusion is not radical. Experts across the political spectrum have been saying it, in different ways, for many years. But it has not permeated our political dialogue on the topic of oil.
Which leads to a forth insight: Ending oil dependence will require political leadership.
The changes required to end oil dependence are far-reaching. Lead times are long. Many current proposals are far too small. For the scope of change needed to solve this problem, presidential leadership is essential." (pg. 4)
From there Sandalow write a hypothetical memo from the President states: "I plan to deliver an address from the Oval Office one month from today. The topic will be oil dependence." Freedom from Oil then proceeds with a dozen or so memorandums from various cabinet-level members and top advisors (i.e., national security, enviroment, economic, etc). The book also includes some interesting interviews from real-life individuals. The hypothetical format of the book is slightly unorthodox, but it is very effective given general theme of the book - what would happen if the next President made breaking the United States' addiction to oil a top priority?
In Part I, Sandalow defines "The Problem" by writing a memorandum by a fictitious U.S. president who is requesting a holistic analysis of our oil addition from all of his cabinet members. Sandalow repeatedly notes that that the U.S. consumes approximately 24% of the world's oil production, yet has only 2% of the world's reaming oil supply. In addition, he notes that 96% of our transportation fleet is utterly dependent on oil, and that there are virtually no (scaleable) substitutes currently available, at least not in the short-term.
Part II of this book outlines possible "Solutions" to the oil addiction. This includes a candid analysis of the various policy and technology alternatives: Plug-In-Cars, Biofuels, Fuel Efficiency, Coal, Hydrogen, Smart Growth, Strategic Petroleum Reserve, and Diplomatic Strategy. (Note: nuclear energy, photovoltaic/solar energy, and wind energy are not discussed in the text as they have effectively no impact on the transportation fleet in the short or immediate term - and are thus irrelevant unless we radidly move towards all electric vehicles).
Part II of the book is fairly comprehensive, but I do have a minor criticism regarding Biofuels. It is my perception that the author does not sufficiently explore the range of challenges involved with scaling-up U.S. liquid fuel production from ethanol and other biofuels beyond today's 4% of the total fuel mix.
In other words, while production of various biofuels could be ramped up to perhaps one-third of our gasoline consumption within a few decades (assuming hundreds of billions of dollars were immediately diverted towards this goal), there are some complicated issues regarding the price of food produced domestically, not to mention the potential adverse impacts on world poverty. (The author briefly mentions the "tortilla riots" that occurred in Mexico during 2006 due to the increase price of corn, which in turn was/is an artifact of increased corn production being diverted to ethanol production, but he seems to downplay potential impacts to domestic/U.S. food prices).
Despite this issue, I applaud Sandalow for his balanced approach regarding the issues surrounding alternative transportation fuels from coal, coal-to-liquids, and his candid assessment of the much-hyped "hydrogen fuels." (he notes the tremendous amount of raw energy required just to produce free hydrogen molecules, and the "astronomical costs" of converting our 169,000 gasoline stations and infrastructure for hydrogen transportation and storage, etc).
Part III of this book is called "Decisions," which offers several difficult yet realistic policy decision options for the next U.S. administration. These policies include significant changes in tax structure, mass transit funding, subsidies to the oil and gas industry, etc. Changes are required immediately. Let us hope that the current crop of politicians seeking the presidency in 2008 might actually debate the various energy policies suggested by Sandalow, as our addiction to oil is about to become a truly global crisis. Why?

Quite simply, the world oil production data over the past 2+ years increasingly suggests that we have entered a plateau in global oil production, which will ultimately be followed by an inexorable decline in global oil production. Many non-partisan experts in various non-profit entities such as ASPO and the UK-based Oil Depletion Analysis Center suggest 2010/11 as the tipping point, ergo, the next president will have to deal with this epochal moment in history.

My major criticism of Sandalow's book is that he does not even mention Peak Oil - despite this phenomenon (along with global climate change) being the "other inconvenient truth" as well as the primary driver of why we need to become "free from oil" - beginning yesterday. (fyi: Despite the massive increase in the price of oil over the past couple of years, according to the EIA data as of September 2007, it appears that the global production peak in regular crude oil + condensate occurred in May 2005 at 74,298,000 barrels per day, and that the global "all liquids" peak occurred in July 2006 at 85,540,000 barrels per day. The world is now producing 1.2 m/b/d less crude oil than it did 2 years ago, and 1.2 m/b/d less total liquiud fuels than it did 1 year ago. If we are on a plateau regarding global oil production, then a slow and permanent decline is on the immediate horizon).
To be sure, Sandalow's book is well researched (with plenty of footnotes that are worth reading), but it would have been more persuasive if he made some mention of the growing evidence that world oil production may be peaking. This issue should have been discussed in Freedom from Oil, and for this reason alone I am giving Sandalow's book four stars instead of five. (For those interested, I highly recommend the award-winning documentary film "A Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash")
Despite this criticism, Sandalow correctly and effectively illustrates that the next several U.S> presidents will face very difficult challenges that will require considerable leadership - not to mention lots of sacrifice from the general citizenry. As Freedom from Oil makes clear, real presidential leadership is required in 2009 and beyond if we are to begin earnestly tackling the most difficult challenges that today's generation faces - our addiction to oil, and the long-term challenges stemming from global climate change.

Summarizing, this book should be required reading for all American citizens - and especially those who are seeking to become the next President - as nothing is more important at this stage in human development than beginning the long and difficult journey to free ourselves from our disastrous addiction to oil.

Kent has offered some hard to find circuit diagrams on the Sweet system! As well as many other of the OU coil configurations. This book is excellent for anyone wanting a fast introduction into the world of alternate energy and does not want to spend hours searching the net for it. Contains info that must have taken years to accumulate.
Also a nice flow from the past to the future, and covering some of the old classic Tesla hard to find inormation to the Bendini layouts. Was a joy to read through it. I rate it a keeper!

I am a mechanical engineer working on a development project and purchased this newly-released book based on the contents description and author's credentials ("Distinguished professor and SAE Fellow").
I am extremely disappointed with the content of this book. From literally the inside of the front jacket it is full of technical errors and incomprehensible charts. Sentence fragments are pervasive and the writing in general is imprecise and often overly casual. Occasionally the author tosses in seemingly random thoughts that serve to distract the reader. (What does pickup truck tailgate position have to do with hybrid vehicles? Nothing.)
If you overlook the incorrect unit conversions on the jacket (degrees Kelvin??) and flip past the literally 23 page Contents (??!) you come to the Preface, where you will find some clues to what went wrong. The author restates the purpose of the book about four times; "for buyers or would-be buyers of hybrids...", "intended for potential hybrid customers", "information for the educated citizen", "for the engineer...a starting point for additional research". I think I disagree with all of these. As a 460+ page book full of equations this is clearly not a buyer's guide. Unfortunately, no engineer can make use of the contents because it is so full of errors and inconsistencies that any seemingly useful nuggets of information must be researched from scratch to determine their validity. What responsible author cites Wikipedia as the source for a graph used to illustrate a key technical concept? (Figure 7.1)
It is perfectly acceptable to publish a technical book that is not written for engineers. It is another thing entirely to release a book that is full of charts, graphs, equations, and statistics that imply a level of technical accuracy that does not stand up under scrutiny.
My overwhelming impression is that the book was rushed to the printer without adequate proofreading and technical editing. Perhaps the publisher gave in to the pressure to cash in on the fuel economy craze that hit in late 2008, and what could have been a useful and comprehensive technical overview turned into a typed collection of notes. It is indeed a shame, since the basic research and technical understanding was clearly there. The author and/or publisher simply did not have the discipline to properly finish the job. I fear for our collective future as an innovative society if we begin to accept work like this.
I believe there is a place in the market for an interesting and accessible technical overview of hybrid vehicle technologies. This is not that book.

This is a 288 pages book, so this book does not go into details. And that is exactly what you found here, an introduction to every form of power generation in use or known today, good explanations about the technology behind, what are their risks and costs. I would certainly recommend this book, especially to those who believe that with only renewable and "clean" energy, the world and its almost 7 billions souls can be supplied in a cost-efficient manner, to those who still believe in myths and legends or simply to those who under their ignorance still believe that radioactive waste can cause a nuclear explosion. These are the facts and the hard true is that, no matter what, coal, gas, oil and even uranium will be consumed and depleted from earth. To think otherwise is to not know about energy and to deny reality. I hope we can find a good substitute, but what we know today is that to get energy you need energy. There is not such thing as free energy, nothing is free even in life.

As an engineer who both uses hydrogen and can work the math, I'm astonished that no one has corrected Peavey. He mixes units, get equations wrong and just plain can't spell. A decelerating engine is "braking" not "breaking", for example. His thermodynamic computations are often wrong once you work them out, his "borrowing" of other sources is painful where "propane" was not changed to "hydrogen" is all cases in a paragraph. Incredible. This text is very nearly the "Anarchist's Cookbook" of renewable energy -- there's a lot of words, some of it correct, but someone's going to get badly hurt if they actually follow this guide. All that, and a decade out of date to boot. If Amazon would take the book back, I'd gladly send them the ashes from the woodstove.

I sampled this book on a whim on my Kindle and then bought the whole thing, even though it was a steep $20 plus. Smil does an excellent job describing how critical technologies such as electrical transmission, motors, and lighting actually evolved, far beyond the Edison-invented-the-lightbulb stories we have all heard. I am just a couple of chapters in, but I am confident in saying if you are leaning towards buying this book, you probably should. He goes into more detail than you may want concerning such things as the efficiency of various electrical technologies, yet somehow he makes the story of leaps and steady improvements rather mesmerizing.
Quite striking is his major thesis that the technological revolution before WWI was sui generis, a singularity in its own right. He explains how the technologies developed then are still very much with us and unlikely to be superceded anytime soon. This is a good antidote to the presentism of the Age of Information and AI enthusiasts. Unless you are already an engineer, you are likely to learn a lot about basic technologies we take for granted. IP lawyers may also find the various patent struggles of interest.

I've lived off-grid with a PV system long enough to recognize how realistic and practical Rex's books and magazine articles on solar living are. Now preparing to build on property already furnished with grid power, I wondered whether a grid-intertie system was a good idea or if it would turn out to be just a costly indulgence of my renewable-energy philosophies. Now that I've met Rex and LaVonne, visited their PV-powered home, and read this book, I'm convinced that there will be no regrets.
Where I live there are apparently no financial incentives, other than net metering, for grid-intertie installations. This book points out that many states and localities do have quite attractive incentive programs and suggests ways to find out. If you live in such a place, lucky you! Go for it!
"Got Sun? Go Solar" doesn't provide all the information you'll need. There are too many variables: personal preference, budget, climate, local politics and attitudes, and so on. Rex and his co-author, Doug Pratt, have instead compiled a guidebook with enough technical background to understand the nature of grid-intertie technology plus resources (many on the Internet) where you can acquire the rest of the information you need.
Don't be concerned that this will be dry reading. The only "dry" is the humor that fills the book. In the world of PV energy there are many funny stories and you'll get to read some of them.

This book is a great summary of numerous clean technologies, spanning the range of power production (solar, wind, biofuels, geothermal, fuel cells), energy storage, energy conservation, food, water, vehicles, houses, materials, and more. John Rubino and his team must have spent an incredible amount of time digging into all the areas of clean tech, detailing their pros and cons, and surveying individual companies in each sector.
(I was able to get a sneak preview and comment on the book before its publication. But when the official version came out, I immediately re-read it, because there were so many pieces of valuable information that I had already forgotten.)
While I am a veteran in the field of alternative energy, I was surprised how many technologies are out there that I didn't fully know about. It can sometimes be overwhelming, or even uncomfortable, to hear about all these different technologies. But I am so glad that I now read about all these potential future developments. As an investor myself, it never hurts to have as much information as possible, and I don't even want to imagine what I would miss if I hadn't read the book.
John Rubino also blends the book with great macro-economics sections and investor advice. He is one of the few people right on the money, as he had predicted the real estate bust in his 2003 book, and he was consistently recommending to avoid or short homebuilders and investment banks, as in his regular interviews on Howestreet.com. He has certainly helped me and my investor group to stay clear of some of the collapses on Wall Street this year.
The current book is by no means just a promotion of all new clean technologies. On the contrary, it contains ample warnings about what can happen to overhyped technologies, what to look for, and how to avoid possible traps. It is an objective book for those interested in new technologies and investing.
