I have a four year old son that is obsessed with cars, race cars, and boats. The Eyewitness series has been an amazing introduction for him into the technical and historical background of the objects that he loves. I would venture that some portions might be difficult for him to grasp, however he still listens with rapt attention and is able to ask intelligent questions. The series in general has a main paragraph for each page, surrounded by many drawings and photos that contain multiple mini-captions. At four, we typically either read the main paragraph or we focus on the smaller vingettes. These books have enriched our ability to talk about the subjects he likes, have given him some basic technical substance, and are showing him that there is a complex history and engineering behind the cars and boats that he's long admired.

This book comes to the aid of women (and men) who don't have a clue about their car's interior workings. The authors don't claim to be experts, but consulted mechanics, government agencies and car manufacturers to get the info a novice needs. It tells you what to check if the heater isn't working, and what to do if you get a flat tire. Preventive tips like checking the air pressure in the tire and checking the oil get covered as well.
There are do-it-yourself as well as do-it-for-me sections, so you will know what you can tackle or what you need help with.

How Cars Work Review

How Cars Work

How Cars Works is refined simplicity. I work for a major Auto Parts chain and when I get new employees, the first day they read this book. Just from two hours, an average "Joe" off the street can get the feel for how a car works. This book is well illustrated to fit the text. Granted, this book does not go deep into any specifics, but gives general information on all subjects such as Engine (top and bottom end), brakes, cooling system, chassis, and much more. I would recommend this book to any new drivers as well as anyone wanting to know more about cars.
