How to Improve MGB, MGC and MGB V8 (Speedpro) Review

How to Improve MGB, MGC and MGB V8 (Speedpro)

Having over thirty years of experience owning, driving, racing and working on MGs, I had hoped to find this book a gold mine of information. It is--fool's gold. The standard MGB engine, required in forms of racing and used by thousands of owners in their cars, is not even covered. Williams makes a vague comment about the 1800 engine not being large enought and states that his book is only concerned with the larger 1950 and 2100 cc modifications. Immediately, he has made this section of the book usless to the vast majority of MGB owners. Additionally, these two engine modifications have some serious problems, well known to the MG community, which the author does not bother to discuss (cylinder bore flex and excessive oil consumption). In a similar vein, the author mentions the MGC automobile, but only in passing. When discussing suspension modifications, he does not mention that the MGC has a completely different form of front suspension than the MGB and his recommendations will not work on the MGC. For the most part, this book would be useless to the owner of this very rare model car. Most of his "improvements" in the suspension area would cost more than the value of a good car (L 2,000 for the rear end modifications, or about $3,600, plus the cost of modifying the body and installation). Throughout the book, Williams makes use of the phrases, "This should be possible" or "I was told by". He offers no supporting documentation (as in personal knowledge based on his experiments) for these broad statements, no results of anyone's experiments, nor does he relate the actual steps involved in most of these modifications. Very poor technical research for an engineer. He does, however, maintain a very consistant quality as his poor research is combined with poor technical writing and some of the worst technical photographs I have seen. (One illustration is of a brake caliper. He does makes a vague comment about a brake line which is barely distinguishable and does not even bother to insert an arrow into the photograph to point out which line.) This book is of very little value to most owners and should not be purchased. It is unfortunate that the SPEEDPRO Series has published this book as it detracts from the overall quality of their line, many of which are excellent and a few of which are truly outstanding. This book is neither.

Useful information but the quality of the book needs to be improved, some of the tables and charts are faded, as though the years have not been kind and there has been many.

Your Expert Guide to MGB and MGB GT Problems and How to Fix Them (Auto-Doc) Review

Your Expert Guide to MGB and MGB GT Problems and How to Fix Them (Auto-Doc)

This book is not a repair manual. It is a compendium of common problems and their solutions for MGB owners. It is really well written guidebook helping one to figure out what is causing that rattle, knock or whine somewhere on the MGB. There is a mountain of useful advice and diagnosis, but don't expect this book to tell you how to fix the problem step by step. For that you need a workshop manual, but on the other hand, a workshop manual will not help you very much to find the problem. That is why this book is a gem and a must buy for any non-expert MGB owner/mechanic. I can't wait for more books in this series to be published for other vintage British sports cars.

MGB Restoration Manual (Restoration Manuals) Review

MGB Restoration Manual (Restoration Manuals)

This is NOT the foundation book for MGB maintenance and repair. That honor is still held by the Haynes MGB 1962 thru 1980 book published in the 1980's and often delivered as part of the "kit" to anyone buying an original MGB, as I just did.
This book, however, is a really superb rendition of modern guidance, with superb photographic essays of complex operations. Although it has a color cover, all of the photographs are in black and white. The book is a real build on top of a normal repair manual, with sections on history, buying (BUY THIS BOOK BEFORE YOU BUY AN MGB), and then bodywork, interior trim, mechanical, electrical, and so on.
The third book that I recommend is Anders Ditlev Clausager's "Original MGB With MGC and MGB GT V8." This is a coffee table book, a "this is what perfect looks like," and it is both inspirational and just plain delightful. I drove my 1964 MGB across the country in the four days after I bought it (at 2500 RPM most of the way, 65 mph, but on special stretches of Iowa, doing 4000 RPM for sustained periods) because I love this car as a sports drive, not a driveway show car. Still, it is really great to see what perfection without regard to long haul rallying looks like, and I could not do without all three books.

MGB Electricals Systems (The Essential Manual) Review

MGB Electricals Systems (The Essential Manual)
Average Reviews:

Great book! As an electrical engineer and a person who has owned and modified MGBs since the early 1970s, I can really appreciate the accurate knowledge and advice this book contains. Most books just show the wiring diagrams and add a few explanations without any real "hands on" knowledge of MGs, just cars in general. This book is MGB specific. It explains the electrical system components in easy to understand layman's terms and carefully describes ways to improve the car's electrical system detailing the advantages of each modification. Many improvements are very quick and easy such as adding proper ground connections to lamps and converting to a single battery while others are more complicated such as converting from positive ground (earth) to negative ground (earth). The author even supports the modifications with test results (why change something if there will be no resulting improvement? Many of the changes would benefit other makes of vintage cars as well. Anyone interested in the maintaining or modifying any parts of the electrical system of their MGB should definitely purchase a copy of this book.

This book is essential reading for every MGB enthusiast. The mechanical aspects and the restoration of the vehicle have been written about in numerous publications but the so often maligned electrical systems has never before been comprehensively covered. For those new to vehicle electrical systems the book provides a simple primer using mechanical analogies. Each system in the car has its own chapter, with simple and uncluttered circuit diagrams in which each wire can be seen in its real colors. More than a how-to-do guide, the book also explains the why of each system and procedure, aiding diagnostics when things don't go quite as they should. The many fault finding guides help pin those elusive problems down. For those wishing to improve the car for reliability and safety.
