Mustang 5.0 Performance Projects (Motorbooks Workshop) Review

Mustang 5.0 Performance Projects (Motorbooks Workshop)

I have dozens of Ford Mustang performance books and this one particularly is the worst of all. It does not tell you in anyway how to perform these titled projects, all what it tells you is "This is something you can do and it may cost you around this much" so dont expect to find any illustrated steps on how to carry out these projects. They could be OK for somebody who just bought his first Mustang yesterday. So my advice is: look elsewhere. My recommendations for you are these 2 (Ford Windsor Small Block Performance by Isaac Martin), and (Mustang Performance Handbook by William R. Mathis). My personal favorites.

How to Tune and Modify Your Camaro, 1982-1998 (Motorbooks Workshop) Review

How to Tune and Modify Your Camaro, 1982-1998 (Motorbooks Workshop)

I've got both this book and Shelby's, and I like both a lot. Another reviewer mentioned they thought this book was too general, but I've found that to actually be helpful, and the author explained that the modifications you need to make depend on your specific needs, situation and budget.
Shelby's book may be more specific, but many of the items he recommends are way out of my price range.
Scott's book recommends some low-buck methods of making some really worthwhile improvements, especially to the suspension, brakes and engine. And there are plenty how-to tips that have probably saved me hours of mistakes.
If you can only afford one of these books, then this one will help more because it'll tell you how to save money on your build-up, too. Or you can do what I did: get both. Their both worth reading.

Camaro Restoration Guide, 1967-1969 (Motorbooks Workshop) Review

Camaro Restoration Guide, 1967-1969 (Motorbooks Workshop)

Camaro Restoration Guide : 1967- 1969 is a knowledgeable book on pretty much every hassle you're likely to encounter whilst undertaking your own restoration of this classic car. The book is broken into chapters which focus on each "group" of sub assemblies that a keen restorer will tackle, like body, engine, interior, sub chassis, electical system, etc.
There are plenty of black and white photographs, and reproductions of original GM assembly line instructions and diagrams, which help you picture how the vehicle fits together properly. There are tips on how to go about the restoration, and what parts to tackle first. There is an excellent chapter on decoding the trim tags used on these vehicles, which is important in order to validate the identity of the vehicle in question.
Overall, an excellent technical resource on the first generation Chevrolet Camaro, and I'm sure my copy will finish up extremely dog eared and liberally covered in greasy fingerprints before my own RS Camaro gets back on the road!

Long time journalist, Steve Turner, who has been the Senior Editor at Super Ford Magazine and is now the Editor of 5.0 Mustang Magazine, has turned author and just inked this new book. Titled, How to Tune & Modify your Ford 5.0-Liter Mustang: 1979 - 1995, it details in depth tips and techniques for turning your favorite car, the Ford Mustang, into an earth shattering rocket. Whether you want to just go mild, or go extremely wild with your modifications, this book has some nice information for everyone. It looks like Mr. Turner has brought the Mustang know-how he's learned while dealing with the Mustang performance industries most knowledgeable people, and deposited it in one easy to read and understand book.
Furthermore, this book breaks down the various ways of modifying each area of the Mustang. Each chapter is dedicated to a different area, such as Induction, Cylinder Heads, Valvetrain, Forced Induction, along with others. Within each of these sections, Mr. Turner goes through most of the common ways to significantly increase the performance of the Mustang utilizing the most worth whiled aftermarket components. Giving advice on the right way to do things so you can successfully build a powerful and reliable car.
In my opinion, the minimal price of this book is well worth avoiding costly mistakes, either via the purchase of incorrect components or from just plain doing things the wrong way. Remember, a little education goes a long way towards success. And, this book is chuck full of good advice and knowledge!
Congrats Steve, nice job!
- Editor, MustangWorks

How to Tune & Modify Chevrolet Fuel Injection (Motorbooks Workshop) Review

How to Tune and Modify Chevrolet Fuel Injection (Motorbooks Workshop)
Average Reviews:

I purchased this book expecting to learn the ins and outs of GM fuel injection, including explanations of VE and spark tables, accel enrichment, decel fuel cutoff, power enrichment mode, etc. "How to Tune & Modify" implies directions for modding these tables; it's the only way to tune a GM fuel injection system! Instead, Watson spends over 2/3rds of the book explaining how to troubleshoot (isn't that what repair manuals are for?!) and perform a standard tune-up! Tune-up is not the same as tuning!
Watson's "modifications" are straight off ebay and the web forums less technically inclined individuals hang out on to discuss mods. Watson recommends doing things like fooling the coolant temperature sensor to increase spark advance, turning up fuel pressure to increase power (complete with an arbitrary and completely unrealistic graph of unitless "Power" vs "Fuel Pressure") and recommends dangerous procedures like disconnecting the oxygen sensor when extensive mods are made. Again, Watson does NOT EXPLAIN HOW TO TUNE FUEL INJECTION SYSTEMS. There is no mention of PROM writers, how to tune VE tables, etc. Watson assumes a budget of $5, a handful of resistors from radioshack, and an anemic TPI motor.
I wish there was some other book I could recommend, but I have yet to find a good book (available from regular booksellers) on this topic. Try to find a GM-published Fuel Injection manual if at all possible.
