Jerry Hafield's books are of the finest quality. Well researched and very full of the detail one expects in a book of this nature. Hatfield follows the entire history of the Scout from the beginning to the end. Included are many great photographs of restored and original machines. Much of the racing history of the Scout is included as well. I gave it four stars because it is a paperback, mine will wear out quickly I am sure.

From 1920 to 1949, Scouts and Sports Scouts-renowned for their handling and low center of gravity-were the motorcycles of choice among Indian enthusiasts heading for the race track. Likewise, the Scout and, to a lesser extent, vertical-engined Super Scout, have since come to be regarded as classic American road-bikes of the period. This history brings both the race and road bikes to life with a blend of archival images, modern color photography of restored bikes, and first-person accounts of legendary riders like Bobby Hill and Ed Kretz, who worked in bike shops during the week and raced for peanuts at local dirt tracks on Sundays.

Triumph TR6 1969-76 Gold Portfolio Review

Triumph TR6 1969-76 Gold Portfolio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While it was disappointing to see that the photos and text in the book are poor copies, the information it contains is really priceless, especially if you own a TR6. It has enough comparisions and detailed descriptions that if you're restoring one, or keeping one running the references here are very valuable.
Also the contemporary magazine reviews are an historical novelty. It's wonderful to see how the critics recieved the six. Like all great cars of the '60s and '70s, the critics had no idea they were sitting on a classic.
If you can get over the poor type and photos, you'll certainly appreciate the substance.

This book is filled with both great information on fishing, but also some fairly technical information on the striped bass fishery, its history, the physiogomy of the striper and the current state of the striped bass as game fish. Very well compiled and presented.

How to Build High-Performance Chevy LS1/LS6 V-8s (SA Design) Review

Greetings!
My name is Bob Wilson, and I am the Sales Manager at CarTech, the publisher of this book. I read Scot's review, and I realized that some clarification is in order. Many of the points he makes are true, but they are true because this book was actually published in 2004, and many of the items he lists were not available then.
We recently modified the book to have color photos instead of the previous edition's black and white photos, and in doing so, the copyright date is shown as 2008. That would lead Scot to believe that this book was brand new in 2008, rather than published in 2004. Unfortunately, the only thing updated was the change to color images, and the content of the book did not change.
The previous black and white edition was also sold on Amazon, to great reviews. To get a full idea of the value of the book, you can click on the authors name and see the reviews there as well. How to Build High-Performance Chevy LS1/LS6 V-8s: Modifying and Tuning Gen III Engines for GM Cars & Pickups (S-A Design)
We hope to do a rectangular port edition (LSX) in the near future. As it is, this book is primarily a cathedral port edition.
Thank you.

In 1997 Chevrolet did the unthinkable: they re-designed the most popular and most modified engine in American history. The Chevrolet small-block V-8 made its debut in 1955,and with its arrival, Chevrolet instantly leaped to the forefront in the minds of hot rodders and performance enthusiasts alike. While the engine grew in displacement and technology over the next 30 years, its basic design remained unchanged . . . until 1997, when the Generation III LS1/LS6 engine design was introduced. The LS1 engine first appeared in the 1997 Corvette, and soon followed in the Camaro Firebird and thousands of full-size Chevy trucks and SUVs. This book is essential for the enthusiast who wants to get the most performance out of this engine design but is only familiar with the older Chevy small-blocks. Full-color coverage includes everything you need to know about these engines, including the difficult engine removal and installation, simple engine bolt-ons, electronic controls for the Generation III engine, and detailed engine builds at four different power levels.

How to Restore Volkswagen Beetle (Enthusiast's Restoration Manuals) Review

How to Restore Volkswagen Beetle (Enthusiast's Restoration Manuals)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had experience with the restoration of a number of vintage cars in the past so after I purchased a 1963 Volkswagen convertible I started to do my homework which consisted of reading everything I could find online about these cars as well as purchasing this book. The main gripe I have with the book centers around the misleading title. This book is not a "restoration manual" but rather a repair manual. That may seem like a petty statement but it is actually an important difference to note for those people who are looking for a reference book to guide them in a proper and correct restoration of a Volkswagen Beetle. I'm not saying that it's necessarily a bad book..in fact as a repair guide it's quite helpful especially in regards to the most involved body repairs. There are an extensive amount of color photos documenting many of the procedures however none of them provide any insight into what would be a considered a "correct" restoration.
Beyond my disappointment with the lack of correct resto info, I would also have to take issue with some of the bodywork procedures outlined in the book. Among the dubious methods employed in some of the extensive repairs were brazed together panels (as opposed to a proper weld) or overlapping patch panels instead of properly fitting and butt-welding the panels. While I realize that plenty of people, past and present, utilize these bodyworking methods, they are considered to be far less than ideal and can often lead to more problems down the road.
The mechanical repairs covered in the book seem to be soild and well thought out. Just as in the bodywork section, repair text is supported by an extensive amount of photos. I have several other books covering the mechanical aspects of the type 1 Volkswagen so I was not as concerned about the detail in this area. If someone was looking for reference covering just the mechanical repairs I might suggest some other books first such as John Muir's "How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive", the Haynes Rapair Manual or the Bentley shop manuals.
Overall I could recommend this book but only with the notes that I have mentioned. In the end, there are not too many Volkswagen books available so even books that are mediocre are probably worth picking up.

Ducati Twins Restoration Review

Ducati Twins Restoration
Average Reviews:

The fact that it may be the one and only is beside the point! Anyone attempting to maintain or restore one of these Ducati models would be well served to buy Walker's book. The price is steep, but the money will be very well spent.
The author, Mick Walker, is unusual in that he is a well respected expert, yet he avoids the slavish PR blather common to many Ducati writers. He paid his dues as a long time dealer and rider, and his approach to the bikes is respectful but pragmatic. Walker writes in a clear, easily readable style. He comes across as someone to spend a few hours drinking beers with in the garage while wrenching on that old Ducati.
The book is also full of excellent photographs, exploded diagrams, and a comprehensive technical specifications section. The text includes exhaustive detail on and the strengths and weaknesses of everything from paint colors to the various electrical systems. More important, it includes useful insights and practical recommendations derived from years of hard work, trial and error. Based on the age and increasing rarity of these machines, Walker's book is an invaluable resource.
One of the most appealing aspects of the book is that it depicts a dollarwise approach to restoring or owning a Ducati. Most motorcyclists may find that laughable, but, if so, they haven't read Walker's book. This is gem.
