Polluting For Pleasure Review

I read this book in the summer of 1994, and was very impressed with the depth of research that went into it. Mr. Mele was deeply and properly concerned about the impact that 2 cycle outboard motors have on the marine environment. He pointed out that the average outboard released about 30% of the fuel it consumed unburned into the air and water. The total volume of fuel was calculated. This book is critical of the regulation, or lack thereof, that the US EPA had put on marine engine emissions. There has been a significant improvement in new engines since 1993, I would like to see what Mr. Mele thinks of the current selection of outboard and inboard marine engines. This should be required reading for every boat owner.

Modelling with Ordinary Differential Equations Review

Modelling with Ordinary Differential Equations
Average Reviews:

If you compare this book with a common calculus text of thirty years ago, that covers the same topics, you will notice one striking difference. Now, the pervasive presence of computers has meant that students can tackle problems that were totally impractical then.
The book reflects this advance by offering algorithms and problems for students to crank up their computers on. No longer are they restricted to only the elegant problems, with analytic answers. Now, "grubby" numbers can be crunched to give insight into problems.
The book also aims at students in the biological and social sciences, who typically do not deal much in differential equations beyond a simple predator-prey problem.
The treatment should be straightforward to most students, who only need a prior course on introductory calculus.

Each situation highlights a different aspect of the theory or modeling. Carefully selected exercises and projects present excellent opportunities for tutorial sessions and self-study.This text/reference addresses common types of first order ordinary differential equations and the basic theory of linear second order equations with constant coefficients. It also explores the elementary theory of systems of differential equations, Laplace transforms, and numerical solutions. Theorems on the existence and uniqueness of solutions are a central feature. Topics such as curve fitting, time-delay equations, and phase plane diagrams are introduced. The book includes algorithms for computer programs as an integral part of the answer-finding process. Professionals and students in the social and biological sciences, as well as those in physics and mathematics will find this text/reference indispensable for self-study.

Anatomy & Development of the Grand Prix Motorcycle Review

This book contains the only cut-away illustration of the famous Moto Guzzi V8 that I've ever seen. I was also impressed with the amout of historic photos used to show the progress and path of GP motocycle development. The only area I felt the book was lacking was current development. Very little current technology, other than Honda's big-bang engine were mentioned. All in all though, the book is well worth the reading.

Kent has offered some hard to find circuit diagrams on the Sweet system! As well as many other of the OU coil configurations. This book is excellent for anyone wanting a fast introduction into the world of alternate energy and does not want to spend hours searching the net for it. Contains info that must have taken years to accumulate.
Also a nice flow from the past to the future, and covering some of the old classic Tesla hard to find inormation to the Bendini layouts. Was a joy to read through it. I rate it a keeper!

Advanced Space Propulsion Systems Review

Advanced Space Propulsion Systems
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This slim book tries valiantly to summarize the entire range of space launch and in-space propulsion concepts, but does a questionable job of it.
The book has the usual problems of a very compressed summary -- some concepts, and many specific technologies and projects, are left out entirely, and there's no room to do more than briefly describe most of the concepts that are included. The level is variable: parts are apparently aimed at people with at least an undergraduate technical education -- there's lots of algebra, and more than a few differential equations -- yet many concepts are described only in qualitative terms, perhaps with a picture or diagram. Some references are to standard reference works or review articles intended for nonspecialists, while others are to specialized research papers likely to puzzle most readers who want more information -- assuming they can find the cited journals at all.
However, the book's major problem is that it's full of errors -- mostly minor individually, but distressing taken as a whole. I work in this field, and know many of the projects mentioned and researchers cited; without actively looking I noticed eleven errors in 38 pages. These range from a faulty diagram (Fig. 2.7) to a gross overstatement of the funding for one project, to fundamental errors in the descriptions of pulsed detonation engines ("a compression wave travels through the tube at the speed of sound" when in fact a detonation is a faster-than-sound process; a sonic or subsonic process is a deflagration) and pneumatic catapults.
If you want quick layman's introductions to a wide variety of advanced concepts, there are better summaries on line.

Space propulsion systems have a great influence on our ability to travel to other planets or how cheap a satellite can provide TV programs. This book provides an up-to-date overview of all kinds of propulsion systems ranging from classical rocket technology, nuclear propulsion to electric propulsion systems, and further to micro-, propellantless and even breakthrough propulsion, which is a new program under development at NASA. The author shows the limitations of the present concepts and how they could look like in the future. Starting from historical developments, the reader is taken on a journey showing the amazing technology that has been put on hold for decades to be rediscovered in the near future for questions like how we can even reach other stars within a human lifetime. The author is actively involved in advanced propulsion research and contributes with his own experience to many of the presented topics. The book is written for anyone who is interested in how space travel can be revolutionized.

Ryder's book is a detailed read, mostly to be enjoyed by the historical racing fan. I was looking for content on the Honda V-4 engineering, development, and rider impressions over its history and was dissappointed at the light coverage. That's not to say that the racing history is well-written and enjoyable, just not my principle goal. The chapters are mostly split between racing and production V-4s. Once I realized this my second read was more enjoyable. I still would have appreciated more engineering analysis/discussion/diagrams.

Even though this is the 4th edition and was just published this January, I still found there are a lot of out-of-dated information in this book. The author has referred a lot on the very old system, such as 8086, 80286... but give very little information about the new systems. For example, the author even didn't mention the use of DIMMS in the memory chapter but solely mentioned EDOs or previously released memory.

All About Electric and Hybrid Cars and Who's Driving Them (Tell Your Parents) (Robbie Readers) Review

All About Electric and Hybrid Cars and Who's Driving Them (Tell Your Parents) (Robbie Readers)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Environmentally friendly cars have been around much longer than you'd think. For example, the first electric cars were introduced in the 1830s. The advantages of a gasoline-powered vehicle were weighed against the electric and in the end the gasoline powered vehicles won out. In the 1960s people began to notice the polluting effects cars had on the atmosphere began to notice that in "placed like Los Angeles, the sky was often hazy and brown with smog." Lung cancer, respiratory problems and global warming were on the horizon. It was definitely time to rethink the fact that we were using nonrenewable resources and hurting our planet and endangering our health.
Famous people like Cameron Diaz, Al Gore and Brad Pitt are trying to set an example by driving hybrid cars. Even making one simple green change is "one way a person can reduce his or her carbon footprint." Motor vehicles contribute a whopping "72 percent of all ozone." With more than 250 million vehicles in the United States alone, we are looking at a serious problem, to say nothing of pollution emitted by oil refineries. In this book you'll learn about the history of hybrid cars, how they work, you'll get to take a look at several examples of these vehicles, and you'll learn how you can help. Did you know that the Lohner-Porsche company, now Porsche, built the first hybrid car in 1899? Amazing!
This is a very thoroughly researched and well-written book about hybrid and electric cars that will fascinate the young car enthusiast. The book is up-to-date and even includes little facts such as the price of gasoline in Europe topped $10 a gallon in 2009. The layout is nice with numerous full colored photographs, informative sidebars and reproductions of interesting ephemera. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, an air pollution experiment, an excellent historical timeline and additional recommended book and Internet resources.

In a Melville-like tale, the true account of ayoung man emerging from bare-chested innocence to the beginnings of a powerful adventurer, this story of 1937 life on a four-masted schooner on the northwest coastof Alaska is an exceptionally worthwhile read.Like an old friend recounting a fascinating experience, Mr. Hofvendahl writes a compelling story of the power of nature and of the iron men who survived on the last of the heavy ships of sail.

As the San Francisco waterfront struggled in the grip of the Great Depression, fifteen-year-old Russ Hofvendahl talked his way aboard an old fashioned four-masted schooner and sailed out beyond the Golden Gate Bridge to catch cod in the Bering Sea. Full of laconic candor, Hard on the Wind recounts this formative journey with vivid anecdotes depicting a world that exists today only in memory. Featuring many period photos of the ship and crew, Hofvendahl's compelling narrative of seafaring adventure relates the difficult lessons he learned while crashing through raging seas, dodging bloody fights in the fo'c's'le, handlining for cod, navigating through blind fog, and mourning a lost shipmate. Aglow with warmth and humor, Hofvendahl's memoir captures both the romance and reality of the seafaring life, and constitutes a truly unique coming-of-age tale.

If only all tractor books had this much useful detail! This is a real "meat-n-taters" book on a particularly popular era of Farmall. If you have one in this era, I don't think there is a better overall book to own... besides the factory service manuals, of course. Guy Fay lives near the IH archive and has done a "Dr. Livingston" of that material. He probably knows it as well as his own backyard. Combined with his practical experience and observation, this means you can count on this book as largely a "primary research" book and not rehashed research done by others. It's intelligently and appealingly laid out and Kraushaar's photography is impeccable throughout.

Coast to Coast by Automobile engagingly explores the challenges met and overcome by the first motorists to drive across America. Because automobiles were viewed with considerable interest and also considerable skepticism in this period, the extensive publicity that these trips generated played an important role in establishing the practicability, reliability, and widespread appeal of automobiles in early twentieth-century America. The author describes the first ten years of such pioneering trips, beginning in 1899 with the first attempt and concluding in 1908 when Jacob M. Murdock accomplished the unheard-of feat of driving his family from Los Angeles to New York City. For each journey, the author asks the following questions: What was the driver or sponsor trying to accomplish, and why? Who was the driver (and passengers) of the car? How did the driver prepare for the trip? How did the car perform? What events occurred during the journey to the car and its driver? Specifically, how did the driver navigate, ford unbridged rivers, cross sandy or muddy ground, find gasoline and oil, repair broken parts, calm skittish horses? How did the driver dress, eat, and sleep? What impressed, disappointed, or surprised the driver most about the experiences encountered? How did the journey change the way Americans viewed the automobile and its usefulness? The author has written the first book to cut through the fiction, legends, and industry-produced propaganda that have long surrounded the first transcontinental automobile trips. He consulted not only automobile journals but daily and weekly newspapers along routes of the eight trips he studies, and resurrected long-lost personal accounts by participants. By scouring photograph collections across the country, the author has enriched his vivid account with 140 illustrations, the most complete photographic record ever assembled on the subject.

For the book "X-15" (The NASA Mission Reports) Editor Robert Godwin collected all important documents from NASA about the "X-15": These are: Biographies, Development of the X-15 Research Aircraft 1954-1959, Bi-Annual Reports to Congress, Nort American proposal, Interim Flight Manual, Utility Flight Manual, X-15 Pilot Rescue Manual, X-15 Flight Log, X-15 The Movie Correspondence, X-15 Accident Report, X-15 Press Release and X-15 Contractor Advertisments The book also contains 8 all-color-pages and hundreds of technical drawings, diagramms and tables. But the best (as always) is the included CD-Rom that features some NASA-Footage, Documets, an interview with Bill Dana, Fligt Logs, Transcipts, books (!) and a VR-Quicktime-model of the X-15. It is important to notice that this is not an dramatic pocket book with test-pilot-heroes (like Neil Armstrong (!) ) but a collection of technical NASA-documents. But why a book about a X-plane in a series of books about spaceflight? The X-15 was the plane that flew to the edge of space and broke some altitude and speed records and gave important impulses for the development of the Space Shuttle. This book shouldn`t be missing in any aerospace-library and is essential for any technical interested people.
