How To Build Classic Hot Rod V-8 Engines (Motorbooks Workshop) Review

How To Build Classic Hot Rod V-8 Engines (Motorbooks Workshop)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The book gives what it promised in its title, and includes essential specs, torque figures, etc. It is very specific to 4 engine builds: Chev 348 and 409, and 2 flatheads (Lincoln and Ford 60). I found his discussion of alternative parts (complete with number references and prices) very useful. The text does a fair job of step-by-step descriptions of each build, but it still needs experience that can read between the lines. I was disappointed by the absence of a gallery of photos of the fruit of his labours... the finished engines. This would have made a useful book truly excellent.

American Samurai Review

American Samurai
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although the economic situation has changed since this book was written (Americans no longer tremble before the Japanese juggernaut), the advice in this book is certainly still relevant.
Humorous and to-the-point, the author points out the follies still rampant in traditional American management style - the caste system of hourly and salaried workers, the unwillingness to engage the workforce, the traditional appraisal system, "Management By Objective", and the failure to view the business as a web of interconnected micro-processes. His argument is based on the philosophy of Dr. Deming and other leading quality practitioners.
True - American business has changed somewhat, but we're not as good as we think we are. This book can still open some eyes, and deserves to be read.

Advanced Automotive Fault Diagnosis, Second Edition Review

Advanced Automotive Fault Diagnosis, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's good for someone who is just getting into the field, or someone interested. Otherwise this is as basic as can be and by no means advanced. It gives a general overview of all vehicle system components. Tells you what sensors are used, what type they are, how to read scopes, scanners and multimeters. It has some good drawings of what waveforms should look like on scopes. Also tells you what knocks, rattles and all kinds of other noices can be in each part of a cars system. Shows you what the inputs are to the computer and what the outputs are. Goes into basic allignment also. Probably more related for year 2000 and older cars. This book not useful for anyone who has been in the field for more than 6 months.

Plugger: Wade Fishing the Gulf Coast Review

Plugger: Wade Fishing the Gulf Coast
Average Reviews:

Don't read this book to learn how to fish the Texas Gulf Coast. While there are morsels of fishing knowledge to be learned from the book, it is more an autobiography of a man who has devoted his life to something he loves. You will be treated to Rudy Grigar's opinions of almost everything, and whether you agree with them or not, you will come away from the book wishing you could meet Mr. Grigar. Written in a plain style, you quickly develop the feeling that with the author, what you see is what you get. I'm sure he is the kind of person I would enjoy spending the day on the bay with, and I'm glad he took the time to share his life with his readers.

The Good Woodcutter's Guide: Chain Saws, Woodlots, and Portable Sawmills Review

The Good Woodcutter's Guide: Chain Saws, Woodlots, and Portable Sawmills
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although the "Good woodcutter's guide" reads well and is loaded with information from techniques to equipment, it does suffer from some shortcomings, most notably a lack of clarity in the description of potentially lethal activities and materials. For example, the discussion of chain saw "kickback" in which he disagrees with conventional wisdom is interesting, but if the novice is to follow advice that runs counter to other expert opinion, he'd better be supremely confident in the author's ability. I have found reason to question the reliability of some of the claims the author makes. An outstanding example is his advocation of a tree felling practice he calls the "open face" method in which the central concept is the cutting of a "notch of 90 degrees" in the trunk. The photographs and drawings shown decidedly contradict this since they appear to be 45 degree notches (Pgs. 91 and 109). It is actually mathematically impossible to cut a 90 degree notch in a trunk unless the bottom cut slopes upward to some degree, yet Mr. Johnson specifically states that the bottom cut must be a HORIZONTAL cut. Has he ever dropped a tree using his own method? I'd like to know how. If I'm going to engage in risky task like falling trees, I want to know that the person's advice I'm following can be counted on to be the safest available. I hate to be picky, but when the clock strikes thirteen, it's time to throw away the clock. On the other hand, if I've missed something, I'd appreciate an explanation and offer my apology.

X-Isle Review

X-Isle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The author of The Various, Celandine and Winter Wood was kind enough to send me a copy of his latest book after it was released in the U.K. In the U.S., the book won't be released until July 13, 2010. Mark that date on your calendar, kiddos. Or better yet, pre-order it. If you're a boy who likes fantasy featuring guys like you, or a girl (like one I know) who prefers stories where the main characters are boys, get this book. If the climax of the Harry Potter series fulfilled all your hopes for a desperate battle of survival in a ruined school, get this book. If you're concerned about what might happen to mankind if the polar ice-caps melt and the oceans rise, get this book. If you like to squirm like a hooked worm while villains menace and suspense builds, get this book. If you've ever wondered whether your farts could be used as a weapon, get this book. Have I missed anybody? That's all right. Get this book anyway and give it to someone who fits one of these descriptions. Then look for them a day or two later with their nails bitten to the quick and a gleam of haunted triumph in their eyes.
The "reality TV" programs of recent years have taught us to associate "survival" with the question of who gets "voted off the island." In a possible, near-future Britain, this question isn't just a metaphor. The floods have come up and, several years later, they still haven't gone down. All that remains of civilization are a few people scratching a living out of the little dry ground that remains. They depend for survival on trade with the Ecks family - three burly brothers who use their SCUBA diving skills to bring up supplies and tinned food from the murky depths.
Isaac, Luke, and Amos Ecks and their associate Moko are armed and ready to defend themselves, their boat, and the island - formerly the site of the Tab Hill Girls' High School - where they process and store the treasures they obtain by either diving or trading. They are ruled by the iron hand of their father, a terrifying religious fanatic named Preacher John. And they are served by the slave labor of a group of boys whose parents bought their passage to the island, hoping life would be better for them there.
In some ways, life on Ecks Isle (or, as it is more often spelled, X Isle) is better than the mainland alternative. The boys are regularly fed. They have a safe, sheltered place to sleep. They are kept physically active and enjoy the company of kids their own age. But that's the best you can say for an island where the work force is pushed to the limit of their endurance, fed starvation rations, terrorized and abused by a couple of teenaged capos, and kept going through all this by the knowledge that, if they weaken, they will be "voted off the island." And in their case, that doesn't necessarily mean they'll make it back to the mainland.
The last boys brought to the island are Baz and Ray, two youngsters who specialize in survival, each in his own way. Baz instinctively moves to protect more vulnerable people like Ray. Ray, for his part, is sustained by an extraordinary talent for keeping secrets, and by a sometimes frightening streak of ruthlessness. In a few weeks, they become part of the tight-knit group of boys who have learned to survive in the nightmare world of X Isle. Nevertheless they bear witness to hideous cruelty and tragic loss. As Preacher John's religious mania reaches the point where human sacrifice may be the inevitable next step, and as the Ecks brothers' disregard for the boys' lives puts them in imminent danger of being drowned in the floodwaters, the boys must move ahead quickly with a desperate, hare-brained plan that is, after all, their only hope.
X Isle will spark a fantastic array of images in your mind. Images of both the best and the worst that people can do to each other in a life-or-death struggle. Images of a world where a change in the color of the water can make the difference between despair and hope. Images of an opportunity for one small group of decent kids to start a new life -- if they can stay alive.
Some of the surprises in the story may not surprise you. I spent the whole book knowing something Baz didn't figure out until the end; and though I had no reason to expect him to be forced on board the divers' boat at the climax of the story, I had already told myself: "That's all this book needs to make the suspense as unbearable as possible." It's sometimes amazing to be right. It's sometimes fun to know something the main character doesn't know. And it's always an intense ride when Steve Augarde is at the controls. If you've read his Touchstone trilogy, you'll know what I mean. But even if you haven't, that's all right. Get this book. It will shake up your ideas about fantasy, flatulence, and young-adult fiction.

When I got my C4 I read all the Vette mags and ads that told me "just add this miracle part and it will increase your horsepower by 200%".
This book tells you what works and what does not. It also tells you if you add this, you also need to change this.
The book does not just tell you about hop-up projects. Most of the book tells you about the everyday things that you need to know if you are not rich. It tells you how to change light bulbs, suspension, interior, etc.
This is a book you will use a lot as your car gets older. It will also save you a lot of money on hop-up projects because he will tell you which ones are marginal and those that work.

Cessna 150 (ASA Reference Books)

Student pilots and others who rely on rental aircraft often have trouble getting their hands on a copy of the correct POH for study and flight planning, since the original has to stay with the plane. This pilot's guide is an excellent and comprehensive resource. In many ways it is more detailed more specific, and easier to read than the actual POH. Also, since it was written after the 150's have been in service for decades, it contains information about flight and handling characteristics and maintenence issues of high-time 150s that were not known when the POHs were written. With this book, and a copy of your aircraft's unique weight-and balance data, you should be all set for the majority of your preflight planning.

The Student's Pilot's Flight Manual: From First Flight to Private Certificiate, Ninth Edition
Average Reviews:

I actually read, and used extensively, the 7th edition of this book. Mr. Kershner has a easy to read and follow style that has helped me tremendously on my way to getting certified as a private pilot. Whenever I was having diffuculty learning a particular aspect of flying I referred first to this book and got the straight and skinny on the subject. Mr. Kershner obviously has a grasp on what a student pilot goes through to understand the technical jargon and concepts of flight principals, navigation, cross country flying, flight instuments, and landing an airplane.
The illstrations are clear and concise. The photographs are very good.
I highly recommend this book to any student pilot as a supplement to ground school, or anyone interested in what it takes to learn to fly, or anyone who flys in a light plane as a passenger and wants to learn more about what's going on in the cockpit and the pilot's mind.

How to Design and Build Your Auto Workshop (Motorbooks Workshop) Review

How to Design and Build Your Auto Workshop (Motorbooks Workshop)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While David H Jacobs' book provides a start for the design and building your workshop, it falls short of completing the task he set out to accomplish. The book starts with a beautiful example of a dream shop on the cover, but no further mention is made of this shop leading to a disappointment of the content between the covers. Many pictures are included showing examples of frayed wires, missing outlet covers, cluttered benches, and construction that wouldn't pass code in many areas. While there are a few good ideas to incorporate into a shop, I would not encourage the novice to design a new shop solely on the examples in this book. David tries to cover too much area in a small book. His time might have been better spent on automobile related tips and less on construction. There are plenty of books available that do a much better job showing good construction techniques. Show more innovative home shops and less high dollar, cluttered, and dirty commercial buildings.

Average Reviews:

I was fortunate to find a copy of this book in the close-out bin at a local bookstore. This was such a good book that I'm now looking at the author's other books.
One thing I like is that the book is profusely illustrated, and that all the background clutter has been cut away from the photos, so that all you see is the bike against a plain white background. Combined with the clear photography and printing, it really allows you to see machine details that would normally get lost.
Another nice characteristic of this book is that the emphasis is upon the bikes, with background information on the state of the company that helps to explain why the bikes evolved the way they did. This historical orientation was aided by the chronological orientation of the book. Related to this is that the book was about bikes, not lifestyles. I hope that when I get a copy of his book on Harleys that this will be true there as well (notice that most books on Harleys have more photos of "trailer trash" than they do of motorcycles, and that you rarely get a chance to see what the older bikes looked like from the factory? -- OK, rant mode off).
If you are fortunate to run across this book, buy it.
Now, if we could get books like this for all the major European and English manufacturers (hint, hint).
