Tom Swift is an above average teenager living in 1910; he is an inventor, and the son of an inventor. This wonderful book combines three of his Tom's adventures under one cover. In Tom Swift and his Motor-Cycle, Tom trades his bicycle for a motorcycle and soon finds himself using his mechanical acumen to foil the plans of those who would steal his father's newest invention. In Tom Swift and His Motor-Boat, Tom purchases a new motorboat but soon finds himself working against a would-be saboteur. And finally, in Tom Swift and His Airship, Tom and his new friend, John Sharp, build John's dream aircraft and foil a gang of bank robbers.
Once again, this book is also a wonderful window on the United States of 1910. While reading, you can see the comparative simplicity of mechanical devices back then, and the simplicity of life. Tom Swift presents a good role model, which is a definite plus, and the story is quite fascinating.
The one fly in this wonderful ointment is the character of Eradicate Sampson, an African-American. "Rad" is presented as an ill-educated buffoon who speaks in an irritating Amos and Andy patter. And, sadly, this is the only African-American character in the three books. But, though he is quite bad in the first story, he gets somewhat better in the second and is mercifully left out of the third story altogether.
But, in spite of that one problem, these are generally very interesting stories - I would just recommend that you consider before purchasing it for a younger reader. For the most part, however, these are very interesting stories, and I did enjoy reading them!

.
I stopped buying Tristan Jones books because I felt there was little substance to them and some fabrication added to help sell them to the publishers. All the books are skimpy fast reads. I hope my opinion is changed, but I'm unwilling to invest in any more of them to find out.
He has a some of good advice for sailors at sea. However, I have to say, that like most of his books I take what he writes with a grain of salt. And, some of what he recommends, I doubt he ever did himself.
That is not to say his advice is bad, just not practical in some cases. I doubt many seaman would follow all of his advice.
For example, he recommends that single handed sailor drag a line behind the boat hooked up to a trip wire arrangement to heave the boat to. Great advice. I doubt anyone follows it or that Tristan Jones did so. That doesn't mean it is not good advice. This sort of thinking is smart thinking, planning ahead for an emergency.
Likewise his advice for having a triangular patch of canvas ready and rigged on the bow with control lines all set ready to cover a hole below the waterline should the unlike event happen that one gets holed below the waterline. This is just something that would get in the way, foul up something else on the boat and cause more trouble than it's worth. I think a better idea is have one ready to go and practice rigging it.
Perhaps these ideas may make sense when you are sitting at a typewriter trying to put enough substance in a book so you can sell it to a publisher. This is my impression of Tristan Jones.
If you get something out of a book like this, you got something that may give you an idea that will save your boat or yourself.
I gave it 3 stars because I felt it was like some of his other books, short books made in an attempt to make money to fund his roving lifestyle as a wandering seaman.
Hey he pulled it off.
Maybe you can too! Bring a laptop if you go cruising, there is bound to be a story in it.

Hot Rod Horsepower Handbook: Big-Block Chevy (Motorbooks Workshop)

(More customer reviews)
This a lot of magazine articles from Hot Rod. Overall I like this book and gave it four stars. I like it better than the HP books "Big-Block Chevy engine buildups". Some interesting information here but not a how to book by any means. Many builds are not documented well enough to reproduce and others are out of price range for your average home builder. I find most builds have been edited way to much and leave me wondering what was used or done to complete the build. If you have not read any magazines and do not know how to use Google it would be helpful to have for the planning stages of a motor you might want to build. However,,,,,,,,,if you are like me and need to have, or study every thing you can get your hands on before jumping into a project, then go for it.

The heart of every hot rod and muscle car is its engine - and the one to have, the most powerful performance engine on the planet, is the big-block Chevy V-8. Tapping into the know-how at Hot Rod magazine, this book offers illustrated, step-by-step instructions for building a big-block Chevy V-8-from grinding valves and selecting headers to shot-peening pistons and putting together winning head and intake combinations. At Hot Rod magazine, there is no such thing as too much horsepower, but the editors and experts are willing to test that limit - and, with this book, to take big-block Chevy fans along for the ride.

The only book of it's kind ever. I appreciate the time and effort that went into this book. There is no other place to find the information contained in it's pages. Thank you John Hege for your time and effort.

Conceived in the 1930s, simplified and successfully tested in the 1950s, the darling of the automotive industry in the early 1970s, then all but abandoned before resurging for a brilliant run as a high-performance powerplant for Mazda, the Wankel rotary engine has long been an object of fascination and more than a little mystery. A remarkably simple design (yet understood by few), it boasts compact size, light weight and nearly vibration-free operation. In the 1960s, German engineer Felix Wankel's invention was beginning to look like a revolution in the making. Though still in need of refinement, it held much promise as a smooth and powerful engine that could fit in smaller spaces than piston engines of similar output. Auto makers lined up for licensing rights to build their own Wankels, and for a time analysts predicted that much of the industry would convert to rotary power. This complete and well-illustrated account traces the full history of the engine and its use in various cars, motorcycles, snowmobiles and other applications. It clearly explains the working of the engine and the technical challenges it presented--the difficulty of designing effective and durable seals, early emissions troubles, high fuel consumption, and others. The work done by several companies to overcome these problems is described in detail, as are the economic and political troubles that nearly killed the rotary in the 1970s, and the prospects for future rotary-powered vehicles.

Building 4.6/5.4L Ford Horsepower On The Dyno Review

Building 4.6/5.4L Ford Horsepower On The Dyno
Average Reviews:

The basis for this book is showing you before and after comparisons for a particular modification. If you want to know how much horsepower and torque a particular throttle body, supercharger, or set of cams will give you, this is the book for you. The book contains mostly engine dyno numbers, so you have to remember that the numbers will be higher than on a chassis dyno.

The 4.6- and 5.4-liter modular Ford engines are finally catching up with the legendary 5.0L in terms of aftermarket support and performance parts availability. Having a lot of parts to choose from is great for the enthusiast, but it can also make it harder to figure out what parts and modifications will work best. Building 4.6/5.4L Ford Horsepower on the Dyno takes the guesswork out of modification and parts selection by showing you the types of horsepower and torque gains expected by each modification. Author Richard Holdener uses over 340 photos and 185 back-to-back dyno graphs to show you which parts increase horsepower and torque, and which parts don't deliver on their promises. Unlike sources that only give you peak numbers and gains, Building 4.6/5.4L Ford Horsepower on the Dyno includes complete before-and-after dyno graphs, so you can see where in the RPM range these parts make (or lose) the most horsepower and torque. Holdener covers upgrades for 2-, 3-, and 4-valve modular engines, with chapters on throttle bodies and inlet elbows, intake manifolds, cylinder heads, camshafts, nitrous oxide, supercharging, turbocharging, headers, exhaust systems, and complete engine buildups.

Vintage Cars (Five-View) Review

Vintage Cars (Five-View)
Average Reviews:

Very nice pictures of a variety of cars. Not artistic photos like Dennis Adler presents, but clear photographs against a blank white background. Not a lot of substance in the written material, but the photographs are worth the price of admission.
My one criticism involves the rather broad choice of cars. The cars are presented alphabetically, rather than being organized thematically. It would not have taken a great deal of effort to provide some sort of overview information that helped illustrate the evolution of car design within this period, rather than just present an apparently random collection of cars.
Finally, I was hoping to see more of the glamorous cars from the 30s, and there were some surprising omissions (such as the Le Baron Cadillacs) from this period.

Modern Military Dictionary: English-Arabic/Arabic-English Review

Modern Military Dictionary: English-Arabic/Arabic-English
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is probably the pre-eminent Arabic-English/English-Arabic Military Dictionary in the world. The terms are very well researched. Many dictionaries misuse military terms just in the source language, which means the translation will never be accurate. This dictionary uses terms which are standard or recognizable throughout the English-speaking military world, and standard Arabic terms that are at least understood in most or all of the widely varied Arabic dialects. It is much better - more accurate, better organized, more comprehensive - than just about any other Arabic dictionary for military purposes, including the Hans Wehr, Oxford, and the Mawrid. The dictionaries produced and issued by the US, Egyptian and Iraqi militaries are also inferior.

I got my copy in Cairo, at Madbuli Bookstore in Talat Harb Square for a better price. Otherwise, this is a good price, especially compared to US prices for most Arabic dictionaries.
As to the other (1-star) rating, that's what he gets for buying a dictionary when he wanted a tourist guidebook.
The only reason I hesitate to give the book five stars is that it doesn't address at all any regional considerations, which are as important as anything in Arabic translation.

Bass Wisdom Review

Bass Wisdom
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Wow, is my one word to describe this remarkable book. Homer Circle with more than 50 years of bass fishing experience, and 30 plus years as an editor with Sports Afield, truly knows every fishing tip, trick and tactic worth mentioning. Bass Wisdom is a very smooth free flowing piece of literature never incomprehensible.
Uncle Homer writes a brief introduction, which expresses his early obsession with bass. Once this bit of history is mentioned. The adventurous journey of bass fishing plunges into the world of bass. Uncle Homer states there is six species of bass and four subspecies. However this text focuses on the three more sought after species largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted or Kentucky bass. The book goes on to discuss where monster bass live, seasonal tactics, favorite plastic worms, bass secrets revealed (account of underwater video), what sounds make bass bite, cold weather bass, fly rodding for bass, and numerous other topics.
This book should be on every serious bass fisherman bookshelf. I give this book five stars and highly recommend it for anyone, novice or a 20-year veteran. I have been bass fishing "consistently as a hobby" for about ten years. After the first reading of Mr. Circle's book, I realized how much an individual can ascertain while on the water if exploring the appropriate methods

Xpath and Xpointer: Locating Content in XML Documents Review

Xpath and Xpointer: Locating Content in XML Documents
Average Reviews:

O'Reilly books are usually a good choice for a professional to learn a concept in an effective way. However, this book is an exception. If you think XPath looks difficult, it is just because this book makes it _seem_ difficult. Read the official W3C specifikation instead and you will see how simple XPath really is.
The book incorporates a lot of discussions about XPath but they really get in the way of XPath, beeing presented the way they are. It would have been more effective if the book explained XPath just by including the 30 pages of XPath specification, and instead focused not on explaing, but on discussing aspects.
My main point is that you learn to use, as well as master, XPath an order of magnitude faster by reading the specification than by reading this book.

Referring to specific information inside an XML document is a little like finding a needle in a haystack: how do you differentiate the information you need from everything else?XPath and XPointer are two closely related languages that play a key role in XML processing by allowing developers to find these needles and manipulate embedded information.XPath describes a route for finding specific items by defining a path through the hierarchy of an XML document, abstracting only the information that's relevant for identifying the data.XPointer extends XPath to identify more complex parts of documents. The two technologies are critical for developers seeking needles in haystacks in various types of processing.

XPath and XPointer fills an essential need for XML developers by focusing directly on a critical topic that has been covered only briefly.Written by John Simpson, an author with considerable XML experience, the book offers practical knowledge of the two languages that underpin XML, XSLT and XLink. XPath and XPointer cuts through basic theory and provides real-world examples that you can use right away.

Written for XML and XSLT developers and anyone else who needs to address information in XML documents, the book assumes a working knowledge of XML and XSLT.It begins with an introduction to XPath basics. You'll learn about location steps and paths, XPath functions and numeric operators.Once you've covered XPath in depth, you'll move on to XPointer--its background, syntax, and forms of addressing.By the time you've finished the book, you'll know how to construct a full XPointer (one that uses an XPath location path to address document content) and completely understand both the XPath and XPointer features it uses.

XPath and XPointer contains material on the forthcoming XPath 2.0 spec and EXSLT extensions, as well as versions 1.0 of both XPath and XPointer.A succinct but thorough hands-on guide, no other book on the market provides comprehensive information on these two key XML technologies in one place.

Introduction to Modeling and Control of Internal Combustion Engine Systems Review

Introduction to Modeling and Control of Internal Combustion Engine Systems
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
To take full advantage of this book you need a good background in control theory (mandatory!) and mechanics. The book has excellent information about the variables, approximations and all the stuff relating to gasoline and diesel engines. If you need a more in depth understanding of the principles sometimes explained superficially in "tunning engines books", this is the literature you need, but please have close to you a "mechanics for dummies" in case you get lost with the formulas.
This book has some references to an ECU's software guidelines but no program example is presented.
The drawbacks: in some figures the letters are missing or misplaced making them a quiz.

Internal combustion engines (ICE) still have potential for substantial improvements, particularly with regard to fuel efficiency and environmental compatibility. In order to fully exploit the remaining margins, increasingly sophisticated control systems have to be applied. This book offers an introduction to cost-effective model-based control-system design for ICE. The primary emphasis is put on the ICE and its auxiliary devices. Mathematical models for these processes are developed and solutions for selected feedforward and feedback control-problems are presented. The discussions concerning pollutant emissions and fuel economy of ICE in automotive applications constantly intensified since the first edition of this book was published. Concerns about the air quality, the limited resources of fossil fuels and the detrimental effects of greenhouse gases exceedingly spurred the interest of both the industry and academia in further improvements. The most important changes and additions included in this second edition are: restructured and slightly extended section on superchargers, short subsection on rotational oscillations and their treatment on engine test-benches, complete section on modeling, detection, and control of engine knock, improved physical and chemical model for the three-way catalytic converter, new methodology for the design of an air-to-fuel ratio controller, short introduction to thermodynamic engine-cycle calculation and corresponding control-oriented aspects.

I actually liked this book. If you have in mind building your own motorcycle and have never done it before, this book lets you know what you are going to have to think about. It's not going to tell you exactly everything you are going to do step by step because every custom bike is different. But it does put in order the things you need to do once you decide what you want.
Maybe the other reviewers didn't realize that they would have to come up with their own ideas about what they wanted to end up with. This book is not about building a particular motorcycle, it is about building YOUR dream motorcycle, whatever style that may be.
I recommend this book to anyone who is considering building a motorcycle, who hasn't done it before and who has a pretty good idea of what they want to end up with. It will help you get your stuff together.

If you wanted to know all about what a wonderful guy the author is and want to see photos of everything he has ever worked on by all means buy this book. If you want good information and clearly written procedures and saftey practices buy another. Here's one example: In a side note unter TIG welding, the author says "Be very careful when welding magneseum, as it can catch fire and not be extinguished by nornal means. Consult Chapter 12 on saftey for more information"
OK- turn to chapter 12...
and there is no information on what to do with a metal fire.
Before anyone tries welding mag engine blocks or wheels or anything they should know that if the part catches fire spraying a normal ABC fire extinguisher will not put it out, that it burns hot enoutgh to cause steel to catch fire, and that spraying water on it can cause an explosion as the fire can be hot enough to split water into hydrogen and Oxygen. This is not mentioned in the book. There are many more cases of the information you need shunted aside for personal anecdotes of the authors or the pages and pages of poor-quality filler photos that show off everything the author has ever worked on.
