Loved the book! Read up on all the old V-8's I've owned or driven. Learned some of the differences between Clevelands and Windsors and big block and small block. However, the V-8 I was perhaps most interested was curiously omitted from this book. I have the Mopar 4.7 liter V-8 in my Grand Cherokee, and that same engine is in my Dodge work truck. This book only covers the older 318 and 360 or the two newer hemis. Oh, well. Still loved the book.

History of Liquid Propellant Rocket Engines Review

History of Liquid Propellant Rocket Engines
Average Reviews:

this book is nothing less than great, it's packed with useful informations, lot of diagrams, pictures. everything you can ask about LRE history is here; definitively another great AIAA book.
i know one of the the first things one would like to know about a "history.." book, is the level of details reported.
this is a very detailed book. i was impressed by the fact that some informations reported here are not so easy to find, like the regenerative channel drilling pattern of the agena rocket engine..
i think you know how rocket engineering textbooks are: they give you some formulas, some ideas; they tell about rocket engines as they were ideal metaphysical objects; where are the pipes? where the bolts? you can't find in them a single detail on the implementation of a real rocket engine, a real existing working object. maybe the book fills the gap: this is not the usual "i'll tell you something about rockets but just to fill 300 pages and collect some money" book, but remembers the efforts of something like "modern engineering.." of huzel / huang, that is to say a book written to be complete (if possible; sure the author tried hard: it's a 911 pages book..) very interesting, useful, and a pleasure to read.
my final impression is that this book has something of the work of art.
absolutely a must for rocket engineers, rocket scientists, rocketry amateurs.
excellent work, Mr. Sutton!

Physiology Demystified Review

Physiology Demystified
Average Reviews:

This book starts with the bare basics and gently guides you through as the subject matter gets more complex. Very thorough explanations and analogies with a quiz at the end of each chapter to ensure you are up to speed. If that's not enough there is a sectional test every few chapters and a final exam at the end of the book. The author caters to those of us who lack short term memory by re-defining key terms and re-stating key facts (in a way that's beneficial, not superfluous)that may be necessary to continue to later chapters. Excellent book

Boiler Operator's Guide Review

Boiler Operator's Guide

This book provides a good basic understanding of boiler operations on a wide variety of boilers. It is geared towards the novice operator or for as a learning guide. The depth is somewhat limited and is not supported by any theory. The author describes the overall process but does not get into optimizing the boiler, which every operator should do.
This reading is not meant to be entertaining or for light reading, but a study guide for the operator...

Illustrated Buyer's Guide to Used Airplanes Review

Illustrated Buyer's Guide to Used Airplanes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I picked up this book thinking that it would be a price guide. It isn't. To be sure, it has a small section giving a range of prices for various aircraft.
The main part of the book is a guide to the purchase of used airplanes. It's oriented to the smaller types that the individual owner would be likely to find interesting and available.
About a third of the book is on general subjects like do you really want to buy, deciding on the type of airplane, searching for the right plane, inspecting it -- all the things you want to consider regardless of the type of plane that you want. Then there's another large section that covers the various aircraft you're likely to find available and interesting. This is broken down by type. Two passenger, four place, and some interesting categories he calls Complex Airplanes, Heavy Haulers, and Affordable Twins. Within the category he lists the planes by manufacturer and gives some description of the various models and versions produced. I had to read the closing section here on War Birds. He basically said that I can't afford one. He's right. A P-47 uses a gallon of 100 Octane (at about $5 a gallon) every thirty seconds. Finally there is an extensive set of appendicies that cover everything from accidents to the pricing section mentioned earlier.
This is a general guide to buying an airplane which covers a lot of the basics. It'll give you the background information you need to even think about buying.

Creating the Twentieth Century: Technical Innovations of 1867-1914 and Their Lasting Impact (Technical Revolutions and Their Lasting Impact) Review

Creating the Twentieth Century: Technical Innovations of 1867-1914 and Their Lasting Impact (Technical Revolutions and Their Lasting Impact)
Average Reviews:

I sampled this book on a whim on my Kindle and then bought the whole thing, even though it was a steep $20 plus. Smil does an excellent job describing how critical technologies such as electrical transmission, motors, and lighting actually evolved, far beyond the Edison-invented-the-lightbulb stories we have all heard. I am just a couple of chapters in, but I am confident in saying if you are leaning towards buying this book, you probably should. He goes into more detail than you may want concerning such things as the efficiency of various electrical technologies, yet somehow he makes the story of leaps and steady improvements rather mesmerizing.
Quite striking is his major thesis that the technological revolution before WWI was sui generis, a singularity in its own right. He explains how the technologies developed then are still very much with us and unlikely to be superceded anytime soon. This is a good antidote to the presentism of the Age of Information and AI enthusiasts. Unless you are already an engineer, you are likely to learn a lot about basic technologies we take for granted. IP lawyers may also find the various patent struggles of interest.

Hemi: The Ultimate American V-8 Review

Hemi: The Ultimate American V-8
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the latest in a long line of very good automotive-related books from author Genat. The photos are top-notch and the text informative, if a little simplistic. The overview of the early and late hemi's origins at the beginning of the book is top notch. The chapters on the many Mopar bodystyles that featured the hemi option are also quite good. My only quibble is that the book often does not show the featured cars' engines in the make and model chapters.
However, if you're a Mopar enthusiast or a hemi nut, this book will "light your fire." Despite the minor quibbles above, it's a great book and I can heartily recommend it.

The authors chronicle changes and improvements and provide hard-to-find information on design and development of the models, serial numbers, codes, production numbers, and anything else an F series enthusiast could want to know. Indispensable to anyone restoring a Farmall F series tractor, the book also provides a clear and fascinating picture of an icon of agricultural history and the machinery of Americana. The stock market crashed and the countrys fields turned to dust, and the tractor, that workhorse of American agriculture, was one more casualty. But in the face of disaster, International Harvester kept improving on its successful Farmall tractor and finally arrived at the F series, which includes some of the finest and best-loved tractors of all time. These are the tractors that pulled American farmers out of the Great Depression. Archival and modern color photographs and detailed text follow the series from the F-12, F-14, and the vastly popular F-20 that replaced the Farmall Regular to huge machines like the F-30, which was better-suited to breaking the Great Plains.

The Shadow Owners' Companion: Maintenance Projects for Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow and Bentley T Enthusiasts
Average Reviews:

I am a reasonably talented amateur mechanic, and a long time car enthusiast/restorer. I was always a bit nervous about buying a Silver Shadow, because I know they are complicated, and very advanced (for their time) automobiles. This book completely explains all of the intricate working of these cars, and more importantly, shows how the home mechanic/enthusiast can take care of most of the regular maintenance, and smaller repairs themselves, rather than having to pay specialists for all of the required work. There are even sections on restoration of woodwork, paintwork, etc. Much more than just a shop manual supplement, this book is absolutely essential for the current owner or anyone contemplating the purchase of one of these Rolls-Royce. It is the best money you will spend, before, during, or after your aquisition of a Silver Shadow.

Very good and helpful information. Although the book has some great information and tips it is not designed for the complete novice (and the author will tell you as well).
Personally, I am more interested in restoring Japanese bikes where as this book tends to focus a little on British bikes, however it contained a ton of valuable tips and made my projects easier and more enjoyable.
Oh, one last point ... I liked the authors style and it was ease to read and I enjoyed going back to it as I needed more ideas.
