This is the book I used when I got started reloading about 10 years ago, and this book gave me just what I needed. When I first got the itch to load my own ammunition, I was overwhelmed by the amount of information and terminology involved in this fascinating field/hobby. It was very difficult to take all the individual pieces of information that I had and form it into an understandable process. I was snowed in under a blizzard of data that I was piecing together through chat rooms and web sites. Everyone was very helpful - basically shooters are the most helpful people I know - but still I was just getting fragments without a solid, complete overview. Phrases like "roll crimp", "seating and sizer dies," and "headspace" came at me in a blizzard. I could look up each phrase, understand each one as a piece, but still the whole picture was fuzzy. In essence, that is what this book will do for you: turn it all into a coherent, linear whole. The writing is very solid and clear, the illustrations are well done and helpful, and the information is very complete. After reading this book, the entire process made sense to me, and more importantly, I was fully warned about the does and don'ts of the reloading world. The coverage is very complete. Primers, powders, bullets and cases are explained with regard to nomenclature and history. All necessary tools and accessories are discussed and explained. This is just a great book. It won't make you an expert (only actual reloading for years will do that), but it will put you on the right road if you wish to become one. --Mykal Banta

Mr Shepard has written the follow up to his Mopar Performance book. Excellent information thats current as of the publishing date. Well written and engaging, but not as detailed as the MP book. You need both. I would also recommend the new book by Richard Nedbal.

Having rebuilt three of my own engines over the last year, I was looking for hints and tips to improve my results and to raise my skill level. From the very beginning of the book, Monroe's attention to detail and common sense approach has done just that for me. This book is worth reading by anyone who has an interest in engines and rereading before any engine rebuild. I highly recommend it.

Panic set in when a friend invited me on a weekend fishing outing with a group of experienced outdoorsmen. Having never landed a lunker in my life, I had slap-stick visions of hooking myself with lures, upended fishing boats, and general ridicule from a bunch of plaid-shirted Grizzly Adamses. Fishing For Dummies saved me from this humiliation and actually turned me into a fisherman. In a fun and readable format, it taught me everything I needed to know: what kind of rod and reel to get, how to equip the tackle box, what kind of bait to use, and most importantly, how to actually fish. Fishing For Dummies literally teaches you how to cast the line into the water, how to attract and hook the critters, and how to reel them in and land them. I ended up catching the two largest trout of the weekend and enjoyed myself to boot. If you need a quick, readable reference to get you started in this sport, this is the book for you.

Technology of the Gods: The Incredible Sciences of the Ancients
Average Reviews:

I bought this book with great anticipation...was on the waiting list for months! When it finally became available I couldn't wait to read it. I flipped through it in even more anticipation at the fantastic pictures and illustrations once I got it.
I have to say I was thrilled and dissappointed all at once. The content of the book was absolutely fascinating. The author stirred up subjects that totally engulfed me; but as I'd read into each, I found him wandering off into some other rather uninteresting part of the subject and leaving me dieing to get back to the origional thought...which he often didn't. I got the feeling that he hurried the book and that it never really got edited... Thoughts ran off the page and never got finished; as if pages were missing from the printing.
I'd like to see this entire book re-thought and rewritten, because the CONTENT of the book is astounding to say the least. I'd recommend it to anyone who's digging into ancient history/origins because it has so much interesting material. But I would certainly warn them that it's not a well written or easy to follow book. I actually found myself getting bored with the author's wandering thoughts, especially when he teased with a fascinating subject, then wandered off to la la land.

How to Tune and Modify Engine Management Systems (Motorbooks Workshop) Review

How to Tune and Modify Engine Management Systems (Motorbooks Workshop)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a few books from the "Motorbooks Workshop" series and I am happy with all of them - in fact I'm kicking around the idea of building a library of them for myself, as they are all instant reference books full of valuable information. I could waste a weekend away just thumbing through them.
THIS BOOK is one of the best automotive "how-to" books I have ever read. Let me tell you why. I have been shying away from stand alone engine management in my search for power-adders on my cars. One of my cars is a mk2 Supra with a tired 5MGE engine and I've been wondering how long it will be before I have to do something about it. There aren't a lot of aftermarket companies out there who work with this engine. Do I rebuild the 5M with stock parts, new gaskets, and maybe a mild port and polish? This would save me the trouble of worrying about engine management, and it would be cheap(er). Or do I swap in the turbo 3.0 inline six 7MGTE from the later mk3? If I do this, I'll need to source a complete wiring harness, and what if the wires are cut, and then I can't figure out how to get it running? Or do I go crazy and swap a twin turbo 2JZGTE from a mk4? Same problem there. Or do I try something completely different and modify the 5M with independent throttle bodies, or build a grassroots centrifugal supercharger system for it? Or better yet, custom fab a subframe and shove an LS1 under the hood? I'm not worried about the fabrication, I'm worried about the wiring! Now it's not just a matter of finding a parts car with an intact wiring harness... I need to build an engine management system and that stuff is... well, scary. I don't know where to start, and I'm not ready to lay down the coin for some TEC III or Megasquirt Whatever thing if I don't know what I'm trying to buy. And the various forums I subscribe to can't offer me enough hands-on information to make an educated decision. I'm not going to pay $2000 for something just `cause everybody likes the cold air intakes made by the same company.
Behold! From behind a curtain Jeff Hartman steps forward with this book. Chapter 1, starting on page 14 outlines the basics of my system in a clear and concise manner. Step 1: Get fuel to the engine compartment. Step 2: Build an intake manifold and throttle. Step 3: Figure out a way to meter fuel. Step 4: Turning the injectors on and off. Step 5: Telling the computer what's going on in the engine. Step 6: Startup. Step 7: Naming the system and making it smart. Step 8: How did we do? Step 9: Revisionist designs.
Each step is explained in simple and effective detail. Yes, I had grasped these concepts conceptually before owning this book, but it is very nice to have them laid before me so neatly. There is good data in these first few pages. For instance, did you know that injectors should be designed around an 80% duty cycle? Also, most injectors cannot provide accurate flow below a threshold of 1.3 milliseconds open time. Jeff told me so. Perhaps this is in my copy of the Bosch Automotive Handbook, but Jeff's book has prettier pictures.
Jeff also told me that an air/fuel mixture of 12.2 is optimum, which I had heard before. But Jeff told me *why*. Nobody has done that before. After explaining most of these basics, Chapter 2 is a breakdown of the functions of an ECU. Jeff doesn't just devote a sentence to the ECU, more than a page of tiny text is devoted to description of components of a simple ECU. He then explains the advantage of calibrated engine management over mechanical fuel injection - his goal is to teach you how to be able to drive your car on the track *and* the street, without the necessity of keeping the revs up and dreading every stoplight.
Occasionally Hot Rod Magazine will have a column on "term of the month" or something like that. I like Hot Rod a lot. It's a good magazine that gets right down to the nuts and bolts of automotive enthusiasm. In these short technical columns, they will explain "volumetric efficiency" or some other complicated term. That stuff is all here, in much more detail. There are even *equations*. Who doesn't like equations?
Chapter 3 is dedicated to sensors. Eleven dense pages of information on sensors. Jeff explains the function of every sensor in detail, including MAF, O2, crank position, throttle position, temperature sensors (for air, gas, and oil), torque and pressure sensors... you get it. Jeff isn't short-changing us. It's all here. I was flipping through Chapter 3 and stopped at a familiar picture. "Hey," I thought. "That looks just like my MAF for my Volkswagen VR6." Yep, it's a Bosch design, and Jeff knows all about it.
Chapter 4: Actuator Systems. Jeff tells us all about the control of electronic fuel injectors - how they are built, equations for flow rates, and a huge chart of fuel injector specs from practically every Bosch, Nippon Denso, Lucas, or AC Delco injector on the market. Jeff doesn't care if you like American cars, German cars, Japanese cars, British cars, Italian cars, or whatever. He just likes cars. Me too. That's why I am in love with this book.
With most of the fundamentals out of the way, Chapter 5 jumps right into "Hot Rodding EFI Engines." The first page has a picture of a supercharged LT1, and the second page of the chapter has a picture of a Porsche 968 turbo. Buy copies of Corky Bell's forced induction books in addition to Jeff's book, and you'll know all you need to know. In this chapter, he talks about the stuff we all like to talk about. Supercharging, turbocharging, nitrous, big lopy cams, different intake manifolds, exhaust, fuel delivery components, all that. He even devotes a little time to hot rodding Chevy's TPI and Ford's MPI.
Chapter 6: Recalibrating Factory ECUs. This is the black magic I wanted to know about. Bam! Right away Jeff has a table of cars and available recalibration systems for those cars. It's not just the basic cars either. The list includes Honda, BMW, Buick, Ford, Chevy, VW, Nissan, Porsche, Toyota, Mazda, and Mitsubishi. Pick an engine, and Jeff knows about it. Audi 1.8T? Grand National turbo V6? Ford 5.0 or 4.6? It's in there. Then he shows how he removed a chip from a Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 and learned to crack it. And look! A list of websites for hacking software. Jeff, you are the man. You have brightened my life.
I am writing too much. And I'm only a quarter into the book. He tells us more about piggy back computers, stand alone systems (AEM, DTA, Autronic, APEXi, Accel - an incredibly comprehensive list of stand alone manufacturers and their kit specifications -prices too!!), swapping factory engine management systems, converting engines to EFI, common installation and startup problems, building intake manifolds (with equations!), EMS tuning on the dyno and troubleshooting (and the best tools to do it), and emissions and OBD systems.
The last ~1/3 of the book is detailed descriptions of installations on a bunch of project cars (including a triple turbo Jaguar, a Lotus, a turbo Honda CRX, a twin-charged Toyota V6, a Golf 1.8T, and a '55 Chevy with a twin turbo small block). The project car sections are neat, but Jeff, I doubt that Golf 1.8T made 335 rear-wheel horsepower. But I'd believe you if you said "335 front-wheel horsepower." That's pretty much the only error I found.
If you are into cars, and you are building a car of your own with a semi-exotic forced induction or naturally aspirated engine, get ahold of this book. It's the best I've seen.

Well i have been working on cars for 18 year, started with my uncle who was an ASE Master Tech when i was 10 helping in his shop and went from there. the only reason i bought this book was the fact that im going back to school to get my degree in Automotive Systems and Automotive Management and this book was required for Automotive Systems. - off sudject some here but it really burns me up that companies now hire more based on a degree than experience but back on topic - anyway i have to admit after looking this book over i am very amazed at just how great its writen in terms of breakdown of systems and what they do and also the fact that it explain in depth where everyone can understand with out the auther talking down to the reader. its just a simple and amazing book that i would recommend to all mechanics, future students, as well as the average person. this book would be great just for someone that doesnt want to get ripped off by mechanics that are just after that $. if you know how a system works you can save $ by 1) describing the problem better when you take it in to the shop and 2) knowing when someone is trying to sell you work on your car that is not needed. i recommend this book to everyone and i am sure glad i found it! it is simple and amazing!!

Although i love the book itself and would give it a 5 star rating, i have to say that the Kindle edition is a blatant rip off. First, its the same price as the paperback with a CD-Rom included, second, they did not bother to make the sources of the CD-Rom available (via a Website) to those who bought it electronically ... . Searched in vain for a link to an online resource for the examples until i got confirmation that this is not included in the electronic delivery (even though its full price) ...

The Metabolic Effect Diet: Eat More, Work Out Less, and Actually Lose Weight While You Rest Review

The Metabolic Effect Diet: Eat More, Work Out Less, and Actually Lose Weight While You Rest
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Most of the reviews I've read here read like advertisements for this book and diet plan. I understand that the authors would like a groundswell of support and Amazon is a good way to begin this, but the reviews here are likely not reflective of what you'd hear from your average reader and user of this plan.
There is very little (perhaps nothing, actually) that is new in this book. Have you ever read a diet book that directs you to eat several small meals spaced out during the day, not to eat too close to bed time, to eat fruit, vegetables and lean meats, and walk 30-60 minutes per day with a few weight-lifting work outs a week? You have? Well, so have I, and you'll read that advice again in this book.
As in most diet books, the authors walk you through basic metabolism and basic nutrition. They write about hormones. It's nothing that hasn't been outlined in other diet books many times over. Overall I've found that diet books tend to focus on the parts of biochemistry and nutrition that most closely match the plan they are promoting. This book is no different.
After taking a questionnaire you are given a general grouping of your metabolic type and directed to a diet that contains more or less of the same ingredients in slightly altered quantities from each other. It's a fairly boring diet plan overall - no surprises, you can imagine how many ways lean meats can be combined with fruit and veg and "acceptable fats", can't you? South Beach would tell you similar things, as would Weight Watchers and probably countless others. There are some cheat meals - again, similar to other diet plans I've read. Cheat, but cheat smart. You've heard that before as well most likely.
The exercise plan I've already outlined - do it moderately every day for 30-60 minutes and then follow a strength training routine the likes of which you'll find monthly in Shape magazine or similar. If you need something mapped out for you, this book will give you that.
Reading back over my review I see I sound pretty "meh" about this book, and that's an accurate take on it. There's nothing revolutionary here and I would suggest checking this out of your library rather than purchasing it, as it's not the diet book you'll want or need on your shelf long term. I would take the bulk of the reviews already listed with a grain of salt. If serious personal trainers and workoutaholics who have written surprisingly excited reviews here about this book haven't already heard the information contained in it a thousand times over, I'll eat my own laptop.

The Diamond of Darkhold (Ember, Book 4) Review

The Diamond of Darkhold (Ember, Book 4)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are few books that I give this low of a rating. I almost hate doing this because I loved the first two books so much, but there are three reasons I'm giving this book only two stars.
The first is it felt like the book was talking down to its young audience. The first two books were so contemporary and edgy, but it felt like this one spent half the time defining big words and inserting placeholder dialogue. The writing style lacked a quality I know Duprau is capable of.
The second is that the book is a rewind of The City of Ember (Books of Ember). It seemed like the characters hadn't really developed since the first book and had to learn all the old lessons over again. Plus it just played the same plot tricks as the first book, only instead of escaping Ember, Lina and Doon are going back. And it totally ignores all of the information from The Prophet of Yonwood (Books of Ember) (which wasn't that good to begin with) until the last ten pages--and even that tie-in seems forced, like it's an afterthought.
The final thing that made this book just not work for me is that the ending is moral driven rather than character driven. Instead of letting the characters' actions speak for themselves, there is a LONG epilogue that tells word for word all the lessons Lina and Doon learned. After all they go through together, the reader should be able to tell what lessons were learned without it being spelled out for them--literally!
This book could have been hot with all the potential in the first two books. The premiss for this one is fantastic and the already-established characters are amazing, but this book just doesn't pull it all together in the end. I wish the series would have ended after The People of Sparks (Books of Ember).

Master The ASVAB: CD INSIDE; Score High and Launch Your Military Career (Master the Asvab (Book & CD Rom)) Review

Master The ASVAB: CD INSIDE; Score High and Launch Your Military Career (Master the Asvab (Book and CD Rom))
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I know how important it is to find a "good review" especially for a book that could help shape your military career, which is precisely why I decided to take the time to write about my CAT-ASVAB experience after reading two study books, taking numerous practice exams, and then re-reading the study books all over again.
First, some of you might be wondering what score I made (I know I would be too). I got a 95%, qualifying me for virtually every program in the military. My best sections were Mathematics Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Electronics Information, and tied for fourth were General Science, Arithmetic Reasoning, Mechanical Comprehension, Assembling Objects, and Word Knowledge. In all of these sections I scored higher than 60. Now that we've established my credibility for this particular subject, let us move on to the review of the study material(s) themselves, and to what extent they helped in preparing me for the exam.
The two books I read were "Master The ASVAB: by Scott A Ostrow, Therese DeAngelis" and "McGraw-Hill's ASVAB, Second Edition" (book titles should always be underlined, but not sure how to do that at the moment). My favorite of the two was "Master the ASVAB: by Scott A Ostrow" because I felt the practice exams were more difficult especially since they are timed. The practice exams for McGraw-Hill's ASVAB were pretty good too, but they just didn't quite feel like the real thing since the tests were not timed. Both books were comprehensive, sparing no expense in covering everything that could (emphasis added) show up on the ASVAB. I'm going to re-emphasize the word "could" because it is likely that 90% of the material won't.
I know this might sound like good news to those of you looking for an advantage, but, the truth is, most of the questions I saw on the exam were not directly covered in the study books. For the mathematically-minded, I will quantify the word "most". By "most" I mean 75-80% of the questions on the exam will not directly be covered in these study books I've listed.
This may sound like a bummer to some and good news to those whom subscribe to the notion that you can't study for this exam, but there is some silver lining here if you continue reading. What the study materials do well is familiarize you with general content and subjects, which will enable you to be a "better guesser". There were a lot of questions, for example, in the General Science section that I guessed on, but I've confident I probably got most of them right since I was able to eliminate choices that were obviously incorrect, thanks to my trusty ASVAB study companions.
Furthermore, I think both books do a tremendous job familiarizing you with the type of Mathematics questions you could see as well as Arithmetic Reasoning, Mechanical Comprehension, and Electronics Information. Keep in mind though, that if you are taking the CAT-ASVAB, everyone's questions could be potentially different. In my Math section, I had Logarithm questions, while other military candidates did not (Thank God I took College Algebra recently before I took the test!) These sections combined make up the 20-25% of the exam which are covered directly in the ASVAB study companions.
To conclude, if I had to go through it all over again, I would not change how I prepared for the exam. Probably the most important element to test-taking (also known as the "X-factor) is Confidence. If you don't have confidence going into an exam, you are likely to second-guess yourself every step of the way. Confidence is probably the greatest gift these books could give since you should already have a good idea of the format of the exam, as well as questions that could (emphasis added for the last time) show up.
Don't listen to all the idiots that are trying to convince you NOT to study for the exam. In today's education system, where public schools are as wry as Fox News, you can't afford to take your chances especially with something as important as deciding what job you're going to be doing in the Military.
If you've made it this far in my review, it tells me you really care about your future. Just remember one thing, Study your a** off so only You can decide what job your a** will be doing for the next 4-6 years, and not the drones down in MEPS. Trust me, they are not your friends, and I'm not either. Which is precisely why I'm telling you to study as much as you can so that you don't need any friends and you can do whatever the H** you want to do in the Military.
Good luck and Happy Test Taking,,,

ASVAB For Dummies Review

ASVAB For Dummies

This book was excellent for cramming before the test. The material that the ASVAB covers is often dry and boring (honestly), but this book makes it an easy read that doesn't put you to sleep.
I used this book as a study aide 1 week before the test, and got a very high score. I'm not saying that using this book will guarantee you a High Score but I'm confident that it will help boost your score.
The fact is; the test material isn't hard but taking the test on things you haven't thought about for a while can be tricky. This book does three things for you:
1. Makes the material a bit more interesting
2. Jogs your memory
3. Familiarizes you with the style and timing of the test sections.
The 3rd one is the most important.
As if you couldn't guess, I highly recommend this book.

The Elements: A Visual Exploration of Every Known Atom in the Universe Review

The Elements: A Visual Exploration of Every Known Atom in the Universe
Average Reviews:

The Elements is a photographic tour de force of items from Theo Gray's personal collection of element samples. If he were to put on a museum show or do a PBS series, this would be the companion book.
It is a beautiful book, with excellent photography and very high resolution printing on a semi-matte black paper which gives the pictures a floating-in-space quality. About my only gripe is that this is the sort of paper that tends to absorb oil from your fingers and acquire permanent fingerprints, so one has to take a bit of care to keep it looking nice.
The bulk of the book consists of a two-page spread for each of elements 1 through 100. The left hand side of each spread will be a full-page image, typically of the element in its native mineral or a refined form, or some object constructed of the material etc. The right hand page contains a few paragraphs of interesting information/trivia about the element, as well as several images of items from the author's collection of objects made of, containing, or otherwise related to it.
For each there are also some pertinent facts such as its position in the periodic table, and diagrams of the atomic emission spectrum, the melting and boiling points, electron order filling, crystal structure, and some basic numerical facts of atomic weight, density, and radius.
There's also some introductory material and additional discussion of elements 101-118.
This is not a formal reference work in any sense. It's a picture book along with interesting trivia and information. But it is also a fabulously entertaining tour of the elements that make up our world, and it's an absolute joy to curl up with and browse through. A very satisfying thing to possess.
It also vividly demonstrates that there will still be a place for physical books for a long time, no matter how successful devices like the Kindle are. This is one you need to hold in your hands rather than read on some kind of screen (no matter how good).
This book gets firmly placed on my list of must-haves for anyone interested in science and the nature of our world and the universe. Very appropriate for science fans of any age.

An eye-opening, original collection of gorgeous, never-before-seen photographic representations of the 118 elements in the periodic table. The elements are what we, and everything around us, are made of. But how many elements has anyone actually seen in pure, uncombined form? The Elements provides this rare opportunity. Based on five years of research and photography, the pictures in this book make up the most complete, and visually arresting, representation available to the naked eye of every atom in the universe. Organized in order of appearance on the periodic table, each element is represented by a spread that includes a stunning, full-page, full-color photograph that most closely represents it in its purest form. For example, at -183˚C, oxygen turns from a colorless gas to a beautiful pale blue liquid. Also included are fascinating facts, figures, and stories of the elements as well as data on the properties of each, including atomic weight, density, melting and boiling point, valence, electronegativity, and the year and location in which it was discovered. Several additional photographs show each element in slightly altered forms or as used in various practical ways. The element's position on the periodic table is pinpointed on a mini rendering of the table and an illustrated scale of the element's boiling and/or melting points appears on each page along with a density scale that runs along the bottom. Packed with interesting information, this combination of solid science and stunning artistic photographs is the perfect gift book for every sentient creature in the universe.

How Cars Work Review

How Cars Work

How Cars Works is refined simplicity. I work for a major Auto Parts chain and when I get new employees, the first day they read this book. Just from two hours, an average "Joe" off the street can get the feel for how a car works. This book is well illustrated to fit the text. Granted, this book does not go deep into any specifics, but gives general information on all subjects such as Engine (top and bottom end), brakes, cooling system, chassis, and much more. I would recommend this book to any new drivers as well as anyone wanting to know more about cars.
